The method includes the steps of: a) determining the position of the wheel in the washing direction, b) determining the distance of the wheel from the device, c) moving the spray nozzle to the spraying position at the spraying distance from the wheel, d) spraying cleaning fluid onto the wheel using the spray nozzle (4) and moving the spray nozzle along the wheel in the washing direction and e) terminating the spraying operation when the front end of the wheel in the washing direction has been reached.
