  • Patent number: 6016546
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of reducing the amount of memory required to scan a given data string for the presence of computer viruses or other data traits of interest including the steps of 1) loading into a memory of a computer a set of generic features that are functionally similar to standard computer virus signatures, but tend to be less specific to particular viruses, 2) locating occurrences of the generic features within the data string, 3) applying a first mapping from the occurrences located during step 2) to obtain a subset of standard signatures, 4) loading the subset of standard signatures into a memory of said computer, 5) locating occurrences within the data string of all signatures from the subset of standard signatures, and 6) applying a second mapping from the occurrences located during step 5) to identify a set of computer viruses that are likely to be present in the data string.

  • Patent number: 4478399
Abstract: An inserter is provided for placing an insert into newspaper jackets as the jackets are fed at printing press speed. The inserts are fed from a hopper by a perforated endless continuously moving belt by means of selectively activating vacuum and air pressure plenums located on the side of the belt opposite the inserts in the hopper. In one embodiment, the flow of air pressure of a vacuum to a plenum is controlled by a valve and in a second embodiment, the perforations and slots in the belt serve as the valve means. The apparatus of this invention provides rapid acceleration of inserts selectively without the necessity of overcoming the inertia of mechanical holding and feeding devices.

  • Patent number: 4456242
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for taking a stack of flat articles such as folded newspapers, and delivering them successively to a conveyor in an overlapped or shingled arrangement to move to a processing station for labeling or addressing or for opening them to receive inserts. A rectangular hopper or gate is located over a traveling belt means to hold a stack of such flat articles with its converging angle pointing downstream. Each bottom article is gripped by the belt means, which is vacuumized in the area under the stack, and is pulled under the gate and downstream. When a given article is only partially through the gate, the succeeding article is gripped primarily by its side portions and pulled under the gate in overlapping or shingled relation with the preceding one, each article being arranged with its side edges at a substantial angle to the direction of travel.

  • Patent number: 4401300
Abstract: An air bearing shelf is provided for supporting a newspaper jacket in open position while being transported on a conveyor during addition of an insert into the jacket at printing press speed. The jacket is oriented on the conveyor with the jacket spine aligned with the direction of conveyor movement. The open side of the jacket is split by a sword, and the top portion of the jacket is elevated by sliding on a transition piece until the free side of the top portion enters a pathway bounded on opposite sides by air cushions supplied through apertured upper and lower walls at the margins of the pathway, while the bottom portion of the jacket continues along the plane of the conveyor and is surpressed below an air cushion supplied through the apertured wall over the pathway of the bottom portion.
