  • Publication number: 20040177956
Abstract: A drill pipe for an oil or gas well is provided that includes a generally cylindrical hollow drill pipe having a length; and a conductive coating connected to the drill pipe to define an electrical pathway that extends along at least a portion of the length of the drill pipe.
    Type: Application
    Filed: March 29, 2004
    Publication date: September 16, 2004
    Applicant: Varco I/P, Inc.

  • Patent number: 6776070
Abstract: An iron roughneck has a pair of upper jaws carrying pipe gripping dies for gripping tool joints. The jaws have recesses formed on each side of the pipe gripping dies to receive spinning rollers. By positioning the spinning rollers in the upper jaws at the same level as pipe gripping dies, the spinning rollers are able to engage the pipe closer to the lower jaws and thus can act on the tool joint rather than on the pipe stem.

  • Patent number: 6763887
Abstract: A method and apparatus for communicating to downhole oil or gas well equipment are provided. The apparatus includes a drill pipe for an oil or gas well including a generally cylindrical hollow drill pipe having an inner diameter, an outer insulative coating attached to the inner diameter of the drill pipe, a conductive coating attached to the outer insulative coating, and an inner insulative coating attached to the conductive coating, wherein the outer insulative coating, the conductive coating and the inner insulative coating together define an insulated electrical pathway from an upper end of the drill pipe to a lower end of the drill pipe.

  • Patent number: 6691801
Abstract: A load compensator is disclosed for use in connection with a pipe running tool. The load compensator includes an outer housing connected to the portion of the pipe running tool that holds the pipe segment. A piston is disposed within the housing, and is connected to a top drive system of the pipe running tool. The housing is formed with a first port through which pressurized air is delivered inside the housing to drive the piston within the housing. A second port is disposed at a selected location on the housing, such that when the piston is advanced past the second port, pressurized air passes through the port, and causes the control circuit to stop delivering air through the first port. Once pressurized air no longer flows through the second port, the control circuit causes air to be delivered to the first port.

  • Patent number: 6637526
Abstract: A pipe running tool for use in an oil drilling system and the like comprises a lower drive shaft adapted to engage a drive shaft of a top drive assembly for rotation therewith. The pipe running tool further includes a lower pipe engagement assembly which is driven to rotate by the lower drive shaft, and is designed to releasably engage a pipe segment in such a manner to substantially prevent relative rotation between the two. Thus, when the lower pipe engagement assembly is actuated to securely hold a pipe segment, the top drive assembly may be actuated to rotate the top drive output shaft, which causes the lower drive shaft and lower pipe engagement assembly to rotate, which in turn rotates the pipe segment. The pipe running tool having a greater slip back offset such that drill pipe and drill pipe tool joints may be passed through the central passageway of the tool without interfering with the front of the slip.

  • Patent number: 6588501
Abstract: A pumping system for injecting buoyant spheres into an oil or gas well having a feeder containing a plurality of buoyant spheres; and a sphere pump in proximity to the feeder, having first and second rotatable wheels, wherein the first wheel has a plurality of notches and the second wheel has a corresponding plurality of notches, such that during rotation of the wheels the first and second wheel notches temporarily combine to form a plurality of pockets, wherein each pocket receives then ejects one of the plurality of buoyant spheres from the feeder during rotation of the first and second wheels.
