  • Patent number: 9521587
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method for setting a clear channel assessment (CCA) threshold includes receiving, by a station from a first access point, a first message including an information element and determining a CCA threshold in accordance with the information element. The method also includes detecting a power level of a channel between the station and the access point to produce a first detected power level and comparing the first detected power level and the CCA threshold. Additionally, the method includes transmitting, by the station to the first access point on the channel, a second message when the detected power level is less than the CCA threshold.

  • Patent number: 9510061
Abstract: A method and apparatus for distributing live video to multiple client devices is provided herein. In particular, a router is provided that acts on behalf of all client devices in its network. The router serves multiple groups of client devices with each group being formed by client devices having similar bandwidth requirements. The router then requests and receives video chunks from a network. The router then redistributes the video chunks to the multiple client devices using a multicast transmission. In particular, to minimize the demands on the core network, the router sets up a separate multicast to each group. Live video, of the appropriate quality is then multicast to each group.

  • Patent number: 9480005
Abstract: Mobile stations can query independent basic service set (BSS) parameters of a group of Access Points (APs) by setting a Pre-Association Message Exchange BSSID Independent (PAME-BI) bit during Wi-Fi discovery. The PAME-BI bit may be included in a Generic Advertisement Service (GAS) request to indicate that an Access Network Query Protocol (ANQP) request carried by the GAS request is querying both independent and dependent BSS parameters. In some embodiments, the PAME-BI bit is included as a field in the ANQP query, rather than the GAS request message.

  • Publication number: 20160302063
Abstract: A method for reducing authentication signaling in a wireless network includes identifying a plurality of access points in a network belonging to a group. An access request message is received from a first access point associated with a device being in range of the first access point. A determination is made whether the device has been authenticated within the group. A proxy accept message is sent to the to the first access point in response to the device being authenticated with the group without communicating with an authentication server for authentication of the device. A master access point may be used in performing the reduction of authentication signaling in the wireless network.

  • Publication number: 20160295497
Abstract: Network signaling loads are controlled in a wireless network by monitoring traffic patterns at an access point and determining that the access point is a high turnover access point. A high turnover access point is determined based on an average time devices spend in a coverage area of the access point being below a threshold level. Beacon and/or probe response messages are generated that identify the access point as a high turnover access point. In addition, a turnover activity value may be generated for the access point and included in the beacon and/or response messages. A mobile device may determine whether to authenticate and associate with the access point based on the turnover activity value.

  • Patent number: 9173224
Abstract: A system and methods are provided to enable differentiated association of stations (STAs) in a WiFi system and provide differentiated quality of service (QoS) based association. The embodiments include categorizing STAs that share a channel of the WiFi network into different association priority classes, wherein the STAs with higher association priority classes wait for shorter times before starting association with an access point (AP) over the shared channel. The association priority classes are assigned by the AP or the WiFi network and signaled to the STAs. Alternatively, the association priority classes are assigned by the STAs and indicated to the AP or the WiFi network. The association priority class is determined for a STA according to traffic type, device type, subscriber type, or a random number generator.
