  • Patent number: 4479020
Abstract: Production of halohydrins; in particular, chlorohydrins by reaction of tertiary alkyl hypohalite and olefinically unsaturated compound in the presence of water and a metal selected from Group II-A, II-B, III-A, III-B, IV-A, IV-B, or V-A of the Periodic Table. The use of such metals improves the production of halohydrin.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 1982
Date of Patent: October 23, 1984
    Assignee: The Lummus Company
Inventors: George D. Suciu, Joon T. Kwon, Atef M. Shaban
  • Patent number: 4415460
Abstract: Organic impurities in aqueous salt solutions; e.g., alkali or alkaline earth chloride solutions in particular, brines, are oxidized with chlorate ions at a pH of no greater than 5.0 and a temperature of at least 130.degree. C. to convert the organics to carbon dioxide. The process has particular applicability to oxidation of organic impurities in an aqueous brine solution derived from the saponification of a chlorohydrin to olefin oxide, prior to introduction of the brine into an electrolytic cell.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 19, 1982
Date of Patent: November 15, 1983
    Assignee: The Lummus Company
Inventors: George D. Suciu, John E. Paustian
  • Patent number: 4304917
Abstract: In the crystallization of a material from a liquid solution thereof wherein normal rapid cooling produces a non-filterable solid, the mixture of material and liquid is subjected to a high shear force field to produce a filterable slurry of the material, with the mixture being subjected to the shear force either during the cooling or subsequent thereto. The process is particularly applicable to recovering nicotinamide from a supersaturated aqueous solution thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 18, 1980
Date of Patent: December 8, 1981
    Assignee: The Lummus Company
    Inventor: George D. Suciu
