  • Patent number: 8430684
Abstract: A connector assembly for connecting a ribbon cable to a circuit board mount. The circuit board mount has a base that is mounted to a circuit board. A dielectric support is secured to the base. The dielectric support has a convex protrusion. The dielectric support forms part of a ribbon cable receptacle, wherein the convex protrusion faces the ribbon cable receptacle. Conductive elements are arranged in parallel on the dielectric support. The conductive elements extend over the convex protrusion. The end of a ribbon cable is placed in the ribbon cable receptacle so that the traces on the ribbon cable contact the conductive elements. A clip or similar mechanical fastener is then used to bias the dielectric support against the ribbon cable so that the ribbon cable becomes pinched within the receptacle. In the receptacle, the conductive elements contact the ribbon cable at a tangent.

  • Publication number: 20020106913
Abstract: A high density connector element and its associated method of manufacture. The high density connector element contains a plurality of conductive wires that are arranged in parallel on the top surface of a flexible substrate. To manufacture the high density connector element, the flexible substrate is coated with an adhesive and wrapped around a cylindrical drum with the adhesive facing outwardly. Conductive wire is then wound around the cylindrical drum in a helical pattern. The conductive wire is densely wrapped around the flexible substrate on the cylindrical drum and is bound by the adhesive, thereby creating the high density connector element. After the winding is complete and the adhesive cured, at least one strip is cut from the high density connector element. The high density connector element has a flexible substrate and multiple conductive wires laid in parallel across the top surface of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6350132
Abstract: What is disclosed is a elastomeric connector and the associated method used to manufacture the elastomeric connector. The elastomeric connector includes a segment of a dielectric substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface. A plurality of conductive elements are positioned within the dielectric substrate in a predetermined pattern. Portions of the conductive elements lay exposed on the top surface and the bottom surface of the dielectric substrate within the selected pattern. Accordingly, any contacts that abut against the top surface and the bottom surface of the elastomeric connector will be electrically interconnected by the conductive wire. Each of the conductive elements is configured in a manner that prevents the dielectric substrate from enveloping the conductive elements at the points where they enter the dielectric substrate.

Each of the conductive elements is configured in a manner that prevents the dielectric substrate from enveloping the conductive elements at the points where they enter the dielectric substrate. Accordingly, as the dielectric substrate is repeatedly compressed, the conductive elements resist becoming buried within the material of the dielectric substrate.
