  • Patent number: 5980993
Abstract: A method of applying a color-plus-clear composite coating to a substrate is provided comprising: applying to the substrate a colored film-forming composition to form a base coat and applying to the base coat a clear film-forming composition to form a transparent top coat over the base coat. Prior to application to the base coat, the clear film-forming composition is heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient to lower its viscosity such that the composition can be atomized and applied as a smooth continuous film. At a temperature of 20-25.degree. C., the clear film-forming composition has a high viscosity such that it cannot be atomized and applied as a smooth continuous film.

  • Patent number: 5565243
Abstract: A process for applying a color-plus-clear composite coating to a substrate is provided. The process comprises applying to the substrate a pigmented or colored film-forming composition to form a base coat and applying to the base coat a transparent film-forming composition to form a clear coat over the base coat. The base coat comprises a resinous binder; a tricarbamoyl triazine compound having the formula C.sub.3 N.sub.3 (NHCOXR).sub.3, wherein X is nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, or carbon, and R is a lower alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, of mixtures of lower alkyl groups; and a pigment to act as the colorant. In a second embodiment of the invention, the base coat comprises a resinous binder, a capped polyisocyanate, and a pigment; and the clear coat comprises a polyepoxide and a polyacid crosslinking agent.

  • Patent number: 5114552
Abstract: Curable electrocoating compositions and the use of these compositions in a method of electrodeposition are disclosed. The electrocoating compositions comprise an aqueous dispersion of an active hydrogen-containing ionic resin and a capped polyisocyanate in which the polyisocyanate comprises a mixture of a diphenyl-2,4'-diisocyanate, a diphenyl-4,4'-diisocyanate and optionally polyphenyl polyisocyanate in which the diphenyl-2,4'-diisocyanate comprises at least 5 percent by weight of a polyisocyanate mixture. The capped polyisocyanate mixture results in a more stable aqueous dispersion than comparable dispersions prepared with capped polyisocyanates derived from the more common diphenyl-4,4'-diisocyanate and mixtures of diphenyl-4,4'-diisocyanate with polyphenyl polyisocyanate.
