Patent number: 4292950Abstract: A gas burning furnace system is disclosed, including a blower which draws air from outside the home for combustion. The blower forces combustion air to the gas burner via a pressure box situated between the blower and the burner. The pressure box encloses a barrier having an adjustable aperture therein, through which the combustion air must pass before reaching the burner. By adjusting the size of the aperture, the rate of supply of combustion air to the burner can be regulated so as to produce complete fuel combustion without cooling the firebox.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1977Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4241874Abstract: An improved heat exchanger (74) for use with a heating furnace (72) is disclosed. The exchanger (74) includes a first plurality of tubes (84) which conduct hot exhaust gases from the furnace (72). Tubes (98) carrying outside air for combustion in the furnace (72) pass proximate the first group of tubes (84) within a heat exchange chamber (90) wherein heat is transferred to the combustion air via a heat transfer medium. Similarly, ambient air in the building passes through the heat exchange chamber (90) of the exchanger (74) through a third plurality of tubes (118). These tubes (118) also pass proximate the tubes (84) carrying hot exhaust gases. In a preferred embodiment, a conduit (80), through which the exhaust gases transit from the furnace (72) to the first plurality of tubes (84) in the heat exchanger (74), can be routed through plenums (110, 126) through which combustion air and ambient air circulate after exiting the second and third pluralities of tubes (98, 118).Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1979Date of Patent: December 30, 1980Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4236443Abstract: A chimney stack exhaust treatment unit and an improved exhaust gas treatment system utilizing such a unit are disclosed. The unit comprises a generally spherical outer housing which fits over the mouth of a caustic-resistant chimney pipe and encloses a horizontally mounted squirrel cage fan which is driven by an electric motor situated above it. The fan is situated directly above the chimney mouth so that when it is rotated, exhaust gases are drawn up through the chimney and swirled around the inner walls of the outer housing. Exhaust ports near the top of the housing provide an exit for treated gas. An inner housing encloses a fan motor, isolating it from the interior of the outer sphere. A conduit connects an opening in the outer sphere with an opening in the inner housing, and the inner housing includes a mouth directly above the fan, whereby rotation of the fan also draws outside air through the inner housing to cool the motor.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1979Date of Patent: December 2, 1980Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4222383Abstract: A surgical drape is disclosed which is combined with suture tapes which are presurgically positioned adjacent the incision such that after surgery and removal of the surgical drape the tapes are approximate the incised skin margin to readily close the incision. The device comprises a pair of spaced sheets coated with a microporous pressure-sensitive adhesive having a liner over the adhesive, at least one of the sheets carries a plurality of spaced fastening tapes opposite the adhesive coated surface for attachment to the other sheet by joining similar tapes on the second sheet. The tapes extend toward the marginal edge of the adjacent sheet and are folded back upon themselves. A surgical drape is then disposed releasably over the tapes and sheets and covers the space between the sheets defining the line for the incision.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1978Date of Patent: September 16, 1980Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4171089Abstract: A self-cleaning heat exchanger in combination with a home furnace system which draws combustion air from outside the home is disclosed. Gases of combustion are drawn up through a plurality of vertical tubes and out a chimney by a fan mounted in the chimney. The lower portions of the tubes are cooled by inside air drawn over them by the return air blower of the furnace, the upper portions of the tubes are cooled by cold outside air drawn across them by the furnace burner unit. Moisture which condenses in the upper portions of the tubes is drawn down through them by gravity. The higher temperature in the lower part of the tubes causes this condensate to revaporize and rise to the upper portion of the tubes, where the process repeats itself. As more water vapor enters the tubes in the flue gas, distilled condensate eventually drops out of the tubes and runs into a drain at the lower end of the heat exchanger.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1977Date of Patent: October 16, 1979Assignees: George W. Schossow, Merchant, Gould, Smith, Edell, Welter & Schmidt, P.A.Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4155001Abstract: A vaporizer having an improved electrode-type steam generator structure. The generator comprises a tubular member defining a boiling chamber and a pair of concentric electrodes disposed in the bottom of the boiling chamber. The surface areas of the electrodes are in spaced relationship and the outer electrode encloses the inner electrode and is provided with means to control the rate and the escape of steam from the electrodes. This is done by providing the outer electrode with a tubular member extending above the water level in the boiling chamber for trapping steam generated by the electrodes and providing an adjustable valve in the form of a disk adjustable toward and away from an opening in the top of the tubular member for restricting the escape of the generated steam. The bottom surface of the disk is shaped to direct steam and water droplets back toward the water in the boiling chamber.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1977Date of Patent: May 15, 1979Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4028526Abstract: A vaporizer having an improved electrode-type steam generator structure to control the amount of steam generated and to maintain the power requirements for generating the steam constant. The generator is particularly adapted for portable room humidifiers where the steam is generated in a confined chamber within a large reservoir of water. The generator comprises a pair of concentric electrodes disposed in the bottom of the steam chamber. The surface areas of the electrodes are in spaced relationship and a perforate cap is placed over the electrodes or the radially outer electrode is an inverted cup-shaped member the end of which is perforated to determine the amount of steam which is allowed to escape off of the electrodes. A fan mixes the steam with air and the unit is provided with an electrical circuit to prevent shocksfrom the unit and to prevent operation without a properly wired and grounded outlet.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1974Date of Patent: June 7, 1977Inventor: George W. Schossow

Patent number: 4028594Abstract: An electrical control positioned between the power cord and the electrically energized appliance to require a proper ground for the electrical appliance before said apliance can be energized by the actuating switch. A test circuit actuated by the presence of current between the B+ line and ground line prior to actuation of the circuit from the B+ line to the load and to the neutral line requires that the ground line be properly installed before the circuit is closed to the load of the electrical appliance to energize the same and maintain it energized.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1975Date of Patent: June 7, 1977Inventor: George W. Schossow
