    Abstract: Cathodically depositable, aqueous coating compositions comprising the reaction product of (A) polycondensates having free hydroxyl groups with a hydroxyl number of at least 40 mg KOH/g, and an average maximum molecular weight of 5000; and (B) a compound having an average of from about 0.8 to 1.5 free isocyanate groups and at least one basic aliphatically bound nitrogen atom. Optionally, there can be included in the reaction product a compound having from about 0.8 to 1.5 free isocyanate groups and from 1 to 3 ethylenically unsaturated double bonds. The coating compositions cure at relatively low temperatures and relatively short curing times to provide films having excellent resistance to water, chemicals, and corrosion.

    Abstract: Heat curable, cathodically depositable, aqueous coating compositions comprising an aqueous emulsion of 98 to 50 percent by weight, preferably 95 to 70 percent by weight, of one or more self-crosslinking cationic binders based on modified epoxy compounds, water-soluble upon partial or total neutralization with an inorganic or organic acid, and 2 to 50 percent by weight, preferably 5 to 30 percent by weight, of a di- and/or triurethane having the formula - ##STR1## wherein R represents an aromatic, cycloaliphatic, or aliphatic hydrocarbon radical; R.sub.1 stands for a hydroxyethyl(meth)acrylate or a hydroxypropyl(meth)acrylate radical; R.sub.2 is the radical of a saturated and/or unsaturated aliphatic monoalcohol with at least 6 carbon atoms and/or an alkyl or alkylene radical with at least 6 carbon atoms, and n is an integer of 1 or 2.

The coating compositions are the reaction products of a resin carrying amine groups and hydroxyl or carboxyl groups, and the reaction product carrying one free isocyanate group of a polyisocyanate and at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one isocyanate reactive hydrogen atom and the group ##STR1## The cathodically depositable electrodeposition paints cure rapidly at relatively low temperatures to provide films which are highly resistant to corrosive influences.

    Abstract: Process of producing, and binders water soluble upon neutralization with acids which are depositable at the cathode of an electrodeposition system and can be crosslinked through thermic polymerization without additional crosslinking components characterized in that (A) 1 mole of an isocyanate having the formula OCN--R--(NCO).sub.n, in which R is an aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical and n is 1 or 2, is reacted at from 0.degree.-50.degree. C., with(a) from 0.1 to 0.5 moles, if n=1, or 0.1 to 1.0 moles, if n=2, of a tertiary dialkylalkanol amine, and subsequently with(b) from 0.5 to 0.9 moles, if n=1, or 1.0 to 1.9 moles, if n=2, of a compound carrying one free hydroxy group and 1-3 CH.sub.2 =CR.sub.1 groups, where R.sub.1 =H or CH.sub.3, and(B) the intermediate resulting from (A) carrying an average of 1 free isocyanate group is reacted at from 10.degree.-100.degree. C.

Optionally, there can be included a saturated and/or unsaturated fatty alcohol or fatty acid. The binders have an NCO-value of substantially zero; a molecular weight of from about 500 to 5000, and in each 1000 molecular weight unit a basic content of from about 0.5 to 3 and a double bond content of from about 0.5 to 4. The binders in coating compositions cure at relatively low temperatures and relatively short curing times to provide films having excellent resistance to water, chemicals, and corrosion.

Component (B) whch optionally can include a saturated and/or unsaturated fatty alcohol or fatty acid will have an NCO-value of substantially zero. The basic content of the emulsion is at least 0.5, and the double bond number is at least 0.5.

    Abstract: Aqueous emulsions of binders for cathodically depositable aqueous coating compositions comprising emulsions of (A) 98 to 50 percent by weight of at least one water-soluble self-crosslinking cationic resin which is water-dilutable upon partial or total neutralization with an inorganic or organic acid and having at least 0.5 basic nitrogen atoms in 1000 molecular weight units and a double bond number of at least 0.5; and (B) 2 to 50 percent by weight of a water-insoluble self-crosslinking polycondensation resin or polymerization resin having a double bond number of at least 0.8. Optionally, the water-insoluble self-crosslinking resin can include basic character but insufficient to provide water solubility. The emulsions have excellent stability without use of other emulsifiers even in substantially diluted form usual for electrodeposition baths.

    Abstract: Heat curable binders for use in cathodically depositable aqueous coating compositions characterized in that curing is through alpha, beta-double bonds on end or side chains of the binders are described. The binders are the reaction product of 2 moles of a diepoxide; 1 mole of a secondary-secondary or primary-tertiary diamine; 2 moles of monocarboxylic acid, and an alpha, beta-unsaturated monoisocyanate, and have an alpha, beta-functionality of from about 0.8 to 2.5. The binders are rendered water soluble by neutralization with inorganic and/or organic acids. Coating compositions comprising such binders cure at low temperatures and short curing times to provide films having excellent resistance to water, chemicals, and corrosion.
