    Abstract: A document handling device that is adapted to turn a document such as a letter or other flat mail piece through an angle of substantially 90 degrees in its own plane by means of a plurality of pairs of feed rollers, the latter being respectively driven at different effective speeds which are proportional to the respective distances of said feed roller pairs from a predetermined axis located adjacent the lower leading corner of said document. The geometry of the system is such that the lower edge of the document before and after being turned is adapted to move along one substantially horizontal planar surface. Provision is made for enabling at least some of said feed roller pairs to feed a document without turning the latter through said 90 degree angle.

    Abstract: Apparatus for sorting flat mail bearing postage indicia adjacent one corner thereof. Pieces bearing postage indicia adjacent their leading edges are selectively sent to first or second transfer stations according to whether the indicia is adjacent the top or bottom edge. The pieces are caused to fall from the first or second transfer stations onto a common conveyor in such a fashion that all pieces on the conveyor are similarly positioned.Those pieces wherein the postage indicia are disposed adjacent their trailing edges are directed to third and fourth stations. The third and fourth stations operate similarly to the first and second stations to position the pieces uniformly on a second conveyor. Each of the first and second conveyors supplies a first and second loading station. At these stations postal trays are automatically filled with mail from the respective conveyors and thereafter the filled trays are deposited in uniform relationship upon a common conveyor.

    Abstract: A mail handling system and apparatus accepts randomly arranged mail, determines the location of postage indicia on individual pieces and feeds the pieces to separate conveyors in response to the determination of indicia location to orient the same and enables combining the conveyed mail pieces so that the indicia thereon appears entirely on one edge. Feed rollers singulate and feed randomly stacked mail past indicia detectors to a positionable chute-like receptacle which is positioned in response to the detection to eject and direct mail pieces to separate conveyors depending upon whether indicia is present adjacent the right or left edge of the piece as it is presented. The conveyors unite to provide a mail output stream with all indicia either adjacent the leading or trailing edge of the moving piece.

    Abstract: A setting mechanism for a postage meter for use in a continuous mail sorting and postage imprinting system which automatically weighs and meters each piece of mail. The system is designed to rapidly handle a large quantity of mixed mail. Mixed mail is continuously and synchronously fed in seriatim along a continuous feed path. Unsealed envelopes have their flaps wetted and sealed. All the envelopes are stopped at a weighing station where they are weighed, and the postage corresponding to their particular weight is computed. The determined postage value is used to continuously reset a postage meter which imprints the required postage upon each envelope as it arrives at a metering station. The actuator banks of the meter are controlled by stepper motors. The metering and weighing functions of the system are synchronized such that the postage meter will imprint the proper postage upon each piece of mail, despite the fact that several envelopes may be simultaneously in transit along the feed path.

    Abstract: A postage meter setting device is described which includes electromechanical apparatus for positioning the various digit selector arms of a postage meter in accordance with the corresponding required postage. Stepper motors drive various digit selector arms through a mechanical linkage, which provides a one to one rotational relationship between the meter selector arms and the linkage. Use of stepper motors results in reduced wear and cost of operation.

    Abstract: Apparatus for handling a multi-layer tape in a postage meter printing machine wherein a portion of the tape is printed with indicia and advanced to the operator and a protective backing portion is wound up on a motor-driven reel after being separated from the printed portion. Advancement of the backing portion of the tape by the reel advances the separated printed portion to the operator. Prior to being wound on the reel, the backing portion of the tape is guided around two sets of rollers defining three points of tangency with a star wheel having radial projections in registration with slots formed in the edge of the backing portion of the tape. Advancement of the backing portion of the tape rotates the star wheel, which includes a plurality of pins which cooperate with a switch to deactuate the motor of the wind-up reel after the star wheel has rotated through a predetermined arc.

    Abstract: A supplemental printer is mounted piggy-back fashion atop a conventional high speed chain printer or other form of computer output printing equipment; and prints, upon the same print-out sheet as the high speed printer, information generated by the same electronic digital computer to which the high speed printer responds. The supplemental printer is capable of printing postage or other special indicia not easily incorporated into the print symbol repertoire of the high speed printer. In order to make the supplemental printer operate rapidly enough to be compatible with electronic data processing equipment, its print impression is divided into parts printed by individual type segments, each actuated by its own individual print solenoid. Some of the segments are equipped with solenoid-actuated variable numerical print modules for the purpose of printing postage or other variable numerical information.
