    Abstract: A drill rod having an inner tube extending through the rod. The rod and the tube form a dead zone that reduces the time necesssary to compress air within the rod. By presenting a smaller internal cross-sectional flow area within the rod and, as a consequence throughout the drill string, the drill hammer disposed at the bottom of the hole will operate more efficiently.
