  • Patent number: 10144707
Abstract: Long-term and high-density energy sources are described that utilize radioisotope batteries that provide a tritium (3H)-based direct energy conversion system. The beta radiation source is a nitroxide compound with a synthetic yield near 100%. The nitroxide compound can be molded into flexible films to cover multiple structures, and has a specific activity and gravimetric density (wt % 3H) comparable to that of tritiated hydrides. A carrier system based on such tritiated nitroxides can be scaled up without significant beta self-absorption, permitting the energy source to have higher specific volume power densities than current radioisotope batteries. Such a carrier can be applied directly to a semiconductor array (such as an integrated circuit) in order to provide electrical power or, alternatively, be prepared with a phosphor and applied to a photovoltaic cell.

  • Patent number: 6656217
Abstract: The aggregation of platelets on the surface of a foreign body exposed to the flowing blood of a living being (such as plastic tubing, a balloon or the end of a catheter surgically inserted in a blood vessel, a stent implanted therein or synthetic grafts, which surface normal promotes such platelet aggregation to form a coating firmly affixed to that surface which would restrict the flow of blood past that surface or to form a blood clot detachable from that surface), is inhibited by a gas permeable coating on the surface of a physiologically acceptable polymer as which contains dissolved or dispersed therein a nitrosyl-containing organometallic compound, such as sodium nitroprusside, which is protected from diffusion from the coating and from direct contact with the blood and which slowly decomposes at the body temperature within the coating and in so doing releases a platelet aggregation-inhibiting amount of nitric oxide which diffuses from the coating during the period when platelet aggregation by the surfa

  • Publication number: 20030039697
Abstract: A composition comprises a hydrophobic matrix, a reducible nitric oxide (NO) donor, and an intrinsic reductant reactably associated together with the reducible NO donor within the matrix, and releases an effective amount of NO from the matrix when wetted at physiological pH, independently of the presence or absence of extrinsic reducing agents. The composition inhibits the growth of target cells in a target medium.

  • Patent number: 6056737
Abstract: A single use pen-like marking device is disclosed which is useful for marking skin to form marks which persist for a least a week and which are invisible under ambient light but fluoresce under ultraviolet light and to reveal cracks and caries in teeth which are difficult to see under normal light and for visualizing plaque on teeth without leaving a stain visible under normal light. It has a flexible housing with a dry wick-type marking nib in one end which communicates with the interior of the housing and which is impregnated with a skin fluorescing furanone. Inside the housing is a sealed fragile glass tube therein which contains a solvent for the furanone. The marking device is activated by bending the housing until the glass tube breaks and releases the solvent, which saturates the marking nib and dissolves the furanone therein.

  • Patent number: 4641637
Abstract: Apparatus for use by a person lying on a support surface to enable the person to apply spinal traction to him or herself, the apparatus comprises a generally U-shaped frame with parallel side rails and a somewhat elevated crossbar connecting the side rails, a flat, seat-forming carriage mounted for back and forth adjustment along the rails, a cord grip on the crossbar, a hip-encompassing belt for a user, and a cord for extending from the base of the belt through the cord grip. With this form of the apparatus, the user places the belt around the hips, sits on the carriage, and with the knees slightly flexed engages the cord in the cord grip under minimum tension. The user then lies back, grips the carriage and exerts pressure with the feet against footrests on the crossbar so as to straighten the legs and move the carriage back along the rails thereby increasing the cord tension and applying spinal traction to the lower back.
