  • Patent number: 4802656
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for dissolving alloy elements and dispersing gas in an aluminum bath comprising a vertical shaft (1) pierced along its axis by a duct (2) intended for passing the gas, connected in its upper part to a gas source and to a drive motor and comprising in its lower part which is immersed in the bath a disc (3) with the same axis as the shaft. It is characterized in that the disc is provided with blades (4) which extend along the generatrices of a right prism of parallelogrammatic section, have a rounded end, are inclined with respect to the horizontal at an angle of at most 45 degrees, have their faces between the two planes containing the upper and lower faces of the disc and are provided with axial orifices (7) connected to the duct (2) by a tubular passage (3). The apparatus permits the rapid production of alloys with a low proportion of alkaline elements therein, in particular in a transportation ladle.

  • Patent number: 4335064
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for packing, also known as lining, electrometallurgical furnaces. The packing is produced from a concrete which is poured in situ or in precast blocks, composed of a setting cement having a low water retention capacity and low porosity and of an aggregate of which at least a proportion is a carbonaceous product such as anthracite. This packing has a noteworthy resistance to the constituents of fluoride-based igneous electrolysis baths and to liquid aluminum.Application to the packing of igneous electrolysis cells for the production of aluminum.

  • Patent number: 4031615
Abstract: The invention concerns an improved method of interconnecting carbon blocks intended for the construction of cathodes in cells for electrolysis of aluminum and the steel bars which connect these blocks to the source of current. The method comprises forming the current supplying bars in two portions or half-bars which are housed in channels provided in the carbon blocks, the half-bars being rigidly connected to the blocks by bedding with cast iron or steel. One or more anchoring points provided near the end of the blocks holds the half-bars in position, while the ends of the bars near the middle of the blocks can expand freely in zones left for the purpose.
