    Abstract: An apparatus for contacting gas and liquid is disclosed in which a vessel has fluid inlet means, fluid outlet means and horizontal trays arranged axially spaced apart in the vessel. Each horizontal tray is provided with a plurality of contacting means which have an open-ended vertical tube, contacting material and swirl imparting means arranged therein, and means allowing liquid collected on a horizontal tray to pass into the vertical tube below the contacting material and from the upper end of the vertical tube to below the tray.
