  • Patent number: 5758842
Abstract: A winding machine for winding webs, such as paper webs which may be longitudinally slit, has two support rollers (TW1 and TW2) that carry the roll being produced (R; R'; R", R"') in a winding bed formed between the support rollers. Both support rollers have elastic casings (M1 and M2) which are however deformable to a different extent. One of the support rollers is partially surrounded by the web during winding. In order to further optimize the winding quality, even in the case of heavy wound web rolls, the support roller (M1) subjected to the highest total load, that results both from static and dynamic loads during winding, has the most elastically deformable casing. Such a winding machine is preferably developed so that the space (DR) delimited by both support rollers (TW1 and TW2) and the already partially produced wound web roll (R) is sealed as much as possible at its ends and from below. An overpressure can be generated in the space (DR) for relieving the inherent weight of the roll (R).

  • Patent number: 5636810
Abstract: A winding machine for winding one or more traveling webs into a corresponding number of wound web rolls includes a backing roll for supporting the one or more traveling webs, a winding station for each traveling web, at least one such winding station disposed on each side of the backing roll, each winding station including a winding device for rotatably supporting a web roll as it is wound, and adhesive applicators mounted on a guide to travel longitudinally parallel with the axis of each roll being wound. The adhesive applicators are movable radially inwardly to a working position and outwardly to a stand-by position relative to the axis of rotation of the wound web roll so as to be retracted in the stand-by position when the last wrap of the web on the wound roll is made to attach the severed end of the web onto the finished wound web roll.

  • Patent number: 5524849
Abstract: A clamping head for engaging the interior cavity of a hollow tube, or core, used to wind a traveling web, such as paper produced by a papermaking machine, comprises a head shank in the shape of a truncated hexahedral pyramid having a clamping surface on each side of the hexahedron. A corresponding number of clamping pieces have contact surfaces which engage the clamping surfaces. The clamping and contact surfaces are contoured with concave, convex and straight pitches in the circumferential direction relative to the shank such that their contact is substantially linear. Expansion of the clamping pieces to engage the core is provided by a combination of pivotal and sliding movement of the contact surfaces on the clamping surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5377931
Abstract: A drive arrangement for apparatus for reeling a traveling web into a reel includes a pair of spaced, parallel guides for supporting a tube on which the web is to be wound. The guides are mounted on pivotable arms and the tubes are rotatably supported in a carriage at either end, which carriages are adapted to traverse the guides as the diameter of the wound web reel grows. A looped, motor-driven belt is disposed over a drive wheel on the carriage to provide torque to the tube continuously from when the tube is initially nipped with a backing roll to when the wound web reel is finished. The carriages are moved along the guides by a motor driven traction mechanism, such as a looped chain which is attached to the carriages.

  • Patent number: 5356087
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for automatically feeding sleeves in roll cutting machines of the support roller type, a wide web (12) of paper or the like is unwound at an unwinding station (10). At a cutting station (20) the wide web (12) is slit lengthwise into at least two narrower, partial-width webs (24). The narrower, partial-width webs (24) are wound up using winding sleeves (44, 54) at two winding stations (40, 50) arranged either side of the support roller(s) (30) and each comprising at least one winding device (41, 51) so that adjacent partial-width webs (24) are wound at different winding stations (40, 50 respectively).

  • Patent number: 5240198
Abstract: A roller (10) used as support, backing or driven roller in winding devices, such as winders for winding wound rolls of paper coming from a papermaking machine, is composed of an outer cylindrical roller element (24), on which an elastic, flexible intermediate layer (26) of elastomeric material is applied. On the intermediate layer (26), an external roller mantle (33) of thin-wall spring steel is provided that can be deformed in a plane perpendicular to the axis due to the contact pressure of the roll (2) and can be pressed against the outer perimeter of the roll (2). A broad contact region is created, which leads to a lower specific nip pressure and to a lower roll hardness. Channels (27, 28) in the intermediate layer (26) serve to increase the flexibility and cooling.

  • Patent number: 4125076
Abstract: A positioning device for transferring a plurality of carriages or the like into desired positions along a guide, and for holding the carriages in said positions, said device having at least one transfer bar extending along the guide and being movable reciprocally within certain end positions and each carriage having a locking mechanism which, in one condition, locks the carriage to the transfer bar for movement therewith and, in another condition, locks the carriage to the guide, wherein said locking mechanism comprises two pistons movable axially in relation to each other and provided with means for engagement with the guide and with the transfer bar respectively, a pressure medium channel leading to a space between said pistons and one of the pistons being provided with spring means so that with no pressure medium applied said one piston is forced into engagement by the spring force while, upon application of pressure between the pistons, said one piston is released and the other piston forced into its enga
