Patent number: 11733874Abstract: Techniques are provided for managing replication journals in a distributed replication system. A data replication system assigns an associated replication journal volume to each replication component operating on a storage node. Each replication component is configured to handle a portion of a replication workload which is distributed among the replication components, and to write journal data in the associated replication journal volume of the replication component. The data replication system performs a recovery process in response to detecting a failed replication component. The recovery process includes designating at least one replication component as a recovery replication component, designating the associated replication journal volume of the failed replication component as a recovery journal volume, and assigning the recovery journal volume to the recovery replication component to enable the recovery replication component to recover journal data in the recovery journal volume.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2021Date of Patent: August 22, 2023Assignee: EMC IP Holding Company LLCInventors: Rivka Matosevich, Roman Spiegelman, German Goft, Lior Zilpa

Patent number: 11537312Abstract: An apparatus comprises a source system comprising a distribution layer, a management component and a plurality of replication components. The distribution layer is configured to obtain an input-output operation corresponding to an address and to identify a given replication component that corresponds to the address based at least in part on a distribution instance. The distribution layer is configured to assign a first distribution identifier corresponding to the distribution instance to the input-output operation and to provide the input-output operation to the given replication component with the first distribution identifier. The given replication component is configured to obtain a second distribution identifier from the management component and to determine whether or not the first distribution identifier is equal to the second distribution identifier.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2021Date of Patent: December 27, 2022Assignee: EMC IP Holding Company LLCInventors: Adi Bar Shalom, Zeev Shusterman, Lior Zilpa, German Goft, Oren Ashkenazi

Patent number: 9191437Abstract: Machines and methods for optimizing data storage among a plurality of data storage repositories are provided. The method comprises processing a data request submitted for storing data on one or more data storage mediums; determining whether duplicate copies of the data are to be maintained on more than one storage medium so that established quality of service requirements are met; and managing duplicate copies of the data on said one or more data storage mediums to meet the established quality of service requirements while servicing the data request.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2009Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Oshrit Feder, Abel Gordon, German Goft

Patent number: 8934363Abstract: A method for managing data transfer in a network environment, the method is provided. The method comprises receiving a request to transfer first data from a first source in a source domain comprising a plurality of sources to a first target in a target domain comprising a plurality of targets. If the first source is configured to transfer data in a first mode or if the first source is configured to transfer data in a second mode and the first data has previously been transferred to the target domain, a signature of the first data is transferred to the first target instead of the first data. If the first source is configured to operate in the second mode and the first data has not previously been transferred to the target domain, the first data is transferred to the first target.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2012Date of Patent: January 13, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Oshrit Feder, Abel Gordon, German Goft

Patent number: 5796999Abstract: In a resilient database system which includes a journaled database which is implemented at one or more locations within a distributed data processing system, multiple diverse consistency levels are specified which each detail a level of consistency to be maintained between a primary database and a replica database. A user is then permitted to select a particular level of consistency for each replica database. Thereafter, each update to a record within the primary database is utilized to initiate an update to the corresponding record within each replica database in a manner which is consistent with the selected level of consistency for that replica database.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1994Date of Patent: August 18, 1998Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Alain Charles Azagury, Danny Dolev, German Goft, John Michael Marberg, James Gregory Ranweiler, Julian Satran
