Publication number: 20100282747Abstract: Disclosed is a closure for a container wherein the container may experience an excessive buildup of internal pressure. The closure is equipped with a “blowout” portion which partially separates from the remaining closure portion if internal pressure exceeds a predetermined limit. The separation occurs at a line of weakness. The line of weakness is specially designed to withstand external, incidental pressure resulting from normal handling yet fracture in a controlled fashion should internal pressure exceed a predetermined amount. In this way inconvenience and possible hazard is avoided from a closure completely separating from the container from excessive pressure.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 16, 2009Publication date: November 11, 2010Inventors: Gerry Mavin, Timothy Stephenson

Patent number: 7314146Abstract: There is described a neck structure in combination with a closure. The neck structure defines a neck opening with a cylindrical sealing surface surrounding the neck opening and an external neck surface. The closure comprises a cap formed of resilient material having a top and a downwardly extending skirt portion depending from the top. An annular plug depends from an underside of the top and one or more ribs are formed on an internal surface of the downwardly extending skirt portion. The annular plug and the one or more ribs are arranged concentrically and are dimensioned such that, upon application of the cap to the neck structure, the annular plug projects into the neck opening and engages the cylindrical sealing surface. At the same time the one or more ribs engage the external neck surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2003Date of Patent: January 1, 2008Assignee: Portola Packaging LimitedInventor: Gerry Mavin

Publication number: 20070278176Abstract: The present invention is directed to a closure for a container. In one of the embodiments provided herein, the closure is provided with a cap having a roof portion and a cylindrical skirt. A well extends from the roof portion into the cap, the well having an inner wall structure that terminates at an edge and a frangible valve joined to the well by a frangible section that extends about a first portion vicinal to a periphery of the frangible valve and by a non-frangible section that extends about a second portion vicinal to said periphery. In another embodiment the frangible valve is defined as a dish-like member positioned at an inclination relative to a central axis defined by the well, such that the frangible section is joined about the inner wall structure of said well and the non-frangible section is joint about the edge of the well.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2006Publication date: December 6, 2007Applicant: PORTOLA PACKAGING INC.Inventors: Gerry Mavin, Tim Stephenson
