  • Patent number: 5171442
Abstract: Water purification apparatus includes a tank having an opening, a stopper removably engaging the opening in watertight relationship therewith, the stopper having a raw water passage in communication with the exterior of the tank and with the interior of the tank. A pure-water passage is in communication with the interior of said tank and an activated carbon column within said tank and in communication with said pure-water passage. The tank also containing a mixed bed ion exchange resin exterior to the activated carbon column and in communication with the raw water passage and with said activated carbon column. Raw water enters the tank through the stopper, passes through the resin and then through the activated carbon and exits the apparatus through the pure-water passage. A method for purifying water includes the steps of passing water through a mixed bed ion exchange resin and then through an activated carbon column.

  • Patent number: 3972678
Abstract: A method of treating air containing odoriferous substances of both large and small molecular weights includes the step of establishing a flow of the air containing the odoriferous substances. The stream of flowing air is exposed to a bath in the form of a fine spray or mist of a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate at a first treatment zone to primarily oxidize the odoriferous substances having the smaller molecular weights and wash the air. The air is then passed through an adsorbing medium in the form of a bed of activated carbon at a second treatment zone to substantially adsorb and remove the remaining odoriferous substances having the larger molecular weights. Advantageously, the mist or droplets of the spray solution are removed from the air subsequent to movement from the first treatment zone and prior to movement into the second treatment zone. With the method, the air is substantially free of odoriferous substances upon removal from the second treatment zone.

  • Patent number: 3949056
Abstract: A method of treating air containing odoriferous substances includes the step of introducing ozone into the contaminated air at a first treatment zone and exposing the contaminated air to the ozone for a predetermined time period. The ozone is maintained in contact with the odoriferous substances for a sufficient time to oxidize a substantial portion of the latter. The mixture of ozone and air is then transferred to a second treatment zone where the ozone remaining in the mixture not utilized in the oxidation process is converted into stable oxygen molecules. In this manner, the treated air is substantially free of odoriferous substances as well as ozone upon the removal thereof from the second treatment zone.
