  • Publication number: 20090044176
Abstract: A method and computer product for dynamically and precisely discovering delinquent memory operations through integration of compilers, performance monitoring tools, and analysis tools are provided. The method includes compiling an application, and linking the application with a tracing library to generate executable, compiler annotated information and linker mapping information. The application is executed to obtain runtime trace information that includes hardware performance counters and tracing library instrumentation events. The trace information, the compiler annotated information, and the linker mapping information are analyzed to produce a delinquent memory operation file containing delinquent memory operation information. The delinquent memory operation information of the delinquent memory operation file is read by the compiler to perform memory reference mapping to guide static analysis and memory hierarchy optimization.

  • Publication number: 20080162825
Abstract: A method for optimizing distributed memory access using a protected page. The method includes generating library calls to perform array accesses. The method further includes generating a layout map or assisting the accesses. Each processor possesses a local copy of this map. The method proceeds by allocating arrays across the processors, such that each processor receives a local portion of the array. The method further proceeds by reserving the memory location immediately before the local address. Then, the method proceeds by placing the memory location address under access protection, such that a protected page is formed.

  • Publication number: 20080127131
Abstract: A solution for cooperative data prefetching that enables software control of a memory-side data prefetch and/or a processor-side data prefetch is provided. In one embodiment, the invention provides a solution for generating an application, in which access to application data for the application is improved (e.g., optimized) in program code for the application. In particular, a push request, for performing a memory-side data prefetch of the application data, and a prefetch request, for performing a processor-side data prefetch, are added to the program code. The memory-side data prefetch results in the application data being copied from a first data store to a second data store that is faster than the first data store while the processor-side data prefetch results in the application data being copied from the second data store to a third data store that is faster than the second data store.

  • Patent number: 7289939
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and system for predicting future values of a target metric associated with a task executed on a computer system. The method comprises the steps of, over a given period of time, measuring at least one defined metric, transforming that measurement into a value for a predictor source metric, and using the value for the predictor source metric to obtain a predicted future value for said target metric. The preferred embodiment of this invention provides a flexible performance multi-predictor to solve the problem of providing accurate future behavior predictions for adaptive reconfiguration systems. The multi-predictor makes predictions about future workload characteristic by periodically reading available hardware counters. Also disclosed is a method and system for periodically reconfiguring an adaptive computer system by rescheduling tasks based on future behavior predictions.
