  • Patent number: 4672136
Abstract: Included are monoadduct monomers made from divinyl ketones wherein only one vinyl bond therein has added to it a nucleophilic precursor. Nucleophilic precursors include phenols, thiols, secondary amines, amino acids, hydrocarbyl phosphites and phosphite esters, organic bis(phosphonites, the bisulfite anion and others.Polyadduct polymers made from the monoadduct monomers. The polyadduct polymers may be homo- or copolymers and may contain a pendant nucleophile residue.

    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Harold E. Doorenbos, Giffin D. Jones
  • Patent number: 4620045
Abstract: Eneynols are prepared from terminal acetylenes and propargylic alcohols using a Cu.sup.+, Ag.sup.+ and/or Au.sup.+ halide catalyst.

  • Patent number: 4235972
Abstract: Ion exchange resins exhibiting increased crush strength and/or higher density are prepared from a cross-linked polymer by imbibing a halo-substituted olefin within the cross-linked polymer's structure and subsequently polymerizing the imbibed olefin. For example, imbibing vinylidene chloride within a chloromethylated, cross-linked copolymer of styrene and subsequently polymerizing the vinylidene chloride forms a high density resin, which resin is useful in the preparation of ion exchange and chelate type resins having improved crush strength.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 22, 1979
Date of Patent: November 25, 1980
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventor: Giffin D. Jones
  • Patent number: 4187256
Abstract: A graft copolymer of an episulfide and the reaction product of a polyalkylenimine and a lower ketone is water-soluble or water-dispersible. The copolymer is made by adding an episulfide to the polyalkylenimine dissolved in a lower ketone and heating below the boiling point of the solvent. The resulting graft copolymer is a corrosion inhibitor.
    Type: Grant

Inventors: Giffin D. Jones, Robert G. Asperger
  • Patent number: 4125478
Abstract: A relatively dilute aqueous solution of an amide polymer such as polyacrylamide when treated with a small amount of a hypohalite salt solution reacts under ambient conditions to form a firm gel. Such firm gels are useful replacements for the aqueous gels prepared from vegetable gums and conventionally employed in air freshener devices and the like.

Date of Patent: November 14, 1978
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Edward J. Sullivan, Giffin D. Jones
  • Patent number: 4112207
Abstract: Polymers, such as butadiene copolymers and isoprene copolymers, having pendant unsaturated tetra-aliphatic quaternary nitrogen moieties, such as those derived from acrylic esters and acrylamides are useful as water-soluble or inherently water-dispersible curable coatings such as protective and/or decorative coatings, paper coatings, textile fiber coatings, printing plates, photo-curable imagable materials useful as photo-resists, lithographic plates, etc., and the like. Such coatings are curable with light, with high energy radiation and with heat in the presence of free radical catalysts to form insoluble, crosslinked coatings.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: September 5, 1978
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventor: Giffin D. Jones
  • Patent number: 4104289
Abstract: Curable filled thermoplastic resin compositions of polymer resin such as high density polyethylene, fillers such as calcium carbonate, and trivinylisocyanurate are curable under free-radical initiating conditions to cured compositions having unexpectedly increased tensile properties and toughness together with expected greater stiffness.
