  • Patent number: 7668464
Abstract: An optical transceiver module having digital control of laser current peaking is disclosed. The optical transceiver module comprises a controller and integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, which are included on a printed circuit board disposed in the module. Transmitting and receiving optical sub-assemblies are also disposed in the module. A digital signal interface interconnects the controller with the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver. Digital control signals produced by the controller are transmitted via the digital signal interface to the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, where they are converted to analog control signals. The analog control signals are forwarded to control components responsible for governing the electrical current supplied to the laser of the transmitting optical sub-assembly. The laser current is intermittently peaked by the control signal in order to hasten the transition from light to no-light emission, thereby improving laser response and performance.

  • Patent number: 7546042
Abstract: A method of reducing interference in a data stream includes filtering the data stream using a first equalizer to output a first filtered data stream. Also, the data stream is filtered using a second equalizer to create a second filtered data stream. Then, one or more error rates based on the first filtered data stream and the second filtered data stream are determined. Based at least in part on those error rates, a filtered data stream is selected from among the first filtered data stream and the second filtered data stream. A threshold value is determined, and then compared against the selected filtered data stream to generate a data bit.

  • Patent number: 7439449
Abstract: Flexible printed circuit boards interconnect to adjacent electronic devices through one or more of high speed data, low speed data, high current, and ground lines and pads. The design of the high speed data pads and traces and adjacent ground pads and traces maintains a desired impedance in the flexible circuit and at the transition from the flexible circuit to a printed circuit board, a ceramic header, or other device to ensure high speed operation. The pads are preferably arranged in a two dimensional geometry such that a connecting area of the flexible circuit is narrower than it would preferably be if the pads were arranged linearly. The two dimensional array also allows the use of the high current thermoelectric cooler pads, which require large surface areas that may otherwise not fit in a conventional linear array.

  • Patent number: 7372879
Abstract: The wavelength of light emitted by a laser and modulated by a frequency response modulator is determined from the power of the emitted light and the current drawn by the modulator. From the temperature and current applied to the modulator and the optical power of the emitted light; the wavelength of the beam of light is determined as a function of a ratio of the current and power for each temperature of operation. As the wavelength of the emitted light shifts, for example as the laser ages or the laser temperature shifts, the inventive methods and devices then detect the wavelength shift and implement any necessary adjustments in the operating conditions of the laser diode. For example, a thermoelectric cooler can be used to heat or cool the laser diode as necessary to thereby adjust the wavelength of the emitted light.

  • Patent number: 7308006
Abstract: A data transmission system that detects fiber faults receives a plurality of data packets carried on a plurality of Gigabit Ethernet links at a plurality of Gigabit Ethernet input/output ports. The system then multiplexes, on a bit by bit basis, the data packets onto an optical link. When the system detects a loss of signal in one of the Gigabit Ethernet links, a signal loss code insert is generated. The system then multiplexes the signal loss code insert with the data packets.

  • Patent number: 7254155
Abstract: A single mode high power vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) using photonic crystals. A photonic crystal is included in at least one mirror layer of a VCSEL. The reflectivity of the photonic crystal is dependent on the wavelength and incident angle of the photons. The photonic crystal can be formed such that the VCSEL lases at a single mode. Because a single mode is generated, the aperture of the VCSEL can be enlarged to increase the power that is generated by the VCSEL for that mode. The photonic crystal can be used with or without DBR layers. The photonic crystal, in one example, forms an external cavity.

  • Patent number: 7194012
Abstract: Systems and methods for biasing an externally modulated laser. An inductorless bias T network is provided that includes a terminating resistor in series with a capacitor. The capacitor is an open circuit for a bias signal and a virtual ground for an RF signal. Thus, the RF signal is terminated by the terminating resistor without dissipating the bias signal through a ground return path of the RF signal. Using a charge pump inverter, a positive supply can be used to positively bias a laser and negatively bias the external modulator through the terminating resistor. A negative power supply is not required. A swing voltage provided by the RF signal causes the external modulator to modulate the light emitted by the laser.

  • Patent number: 7177547
Abstract: An integrated post-amplifier and laser driver assembly is provided that is implemented as a single integrated circuit and is configured to implement various effects, such as polarity control, concerning data signals received by an optical transceiver in conjunction with which the integrated post-amplifier and laser driver assembly is employed. The data signal polarity control is implemented, both in the post-amplifier assembly and the laser driver assembly, by an amplifier that changes the polarity of the data signal by modifying a relationship between first and second propagation paths of the data signal. The data signal polarity control is typically performed in response to a multiplexed digital control signal received at a digital control interface of the integrated post-amplifier and laser driver assembly.
