    Abstract: A cosmetic composition for topical application to human skin contains niacinamide, or a precursor thereof, for lightening the skin, together with an ultra-violet absorbing sunscreen to protect against subsequent sunburn or suntan. Preferably more than one sunscreen is employed to provide for protection over a wide UV spectrum. The active ingredients of the composition can be provided for use as a cream, lotion, aerosol spray or in other classical forms by employing an appropriate vehicle.

    Abstract: Skin can be lightened by application of a composition containing a skin lightening amount of niacin and a physiologically acceptable carrier. Such a composition contains from 0.2% to about 10% by weight of niacin and optionally also a compound which absorbs ultra-violet light in the range 290-360 nm to counteract the tanning and burning effect of sunlight.
