The method may include the steps of receiving the rich content stream at a media player, where the descriptive stream is generated from a rich content file executed separately from a source for the media stream, and where the media stream and the descriptive stream are received as separate streams at the media player. The method may also include synchronizing the media stream and the descriptive stream at the media player so that information in the descriptive stream is temporally synchronized with media content playing from the media stream. In addition the method may include activating the playing of the descriptive stream while the media stream is playing on the media player, where descriptive content from the descriptive stream is not played on the media player until being activated by a user.

Additionally, the set top box converts the syndicated feed for use by the set top box, and causes at least one image based at least in part on the syndicated feed to be displayed on a display device for a user.

In a novel aspect of some embodiments, a real-time on demand server may be configured to integrate real-time content with on-demand content. A viewer profile that includes at least one item of interest and an advertisement profile that includes a mapping from one or more items to at least one advertisement are maintained. An item in the viewer profile is matched to one or more advertisements based on the advertisement profile. The content stream is retrieved and an advertisement slot into which an advertisement should be inserted is identified. The advertisement to be inserted is selected from the one or more advertisements and the content of the advertisement is inserted into the advertisement slot in the content stream. A video component of the content stream with the content of the advertisement inserted is displayed on a display device.

Other embodiments provide automatic conversion services and/or networked content storage.
