  • Patent number: 8065870
Abstract: Method and device for reduction of a gas component in an exhaust gas flow of a combustion engine (1) that is adapted for operation by a lean air/fuel mixture. An exhaust pipe (21) is included for transport of the exhaust gas flow from the engine (1). A separation unit (22) is also included that is arranged along the exhaust pipe (21), which separation unit (22) has a wall structure (32) of a material which provides separation of the gas component from the exhaust gas flow by means of a selective passage of the gas component before other gas components in the exhaust gas flow. The method provides for a reduction and a separation unit that is intended to be utilized during such a reduction. An improved reduction of in particular NOx compounds from a so-called “lean-burn” engine is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6354078
Abstract: The invention relates to a device and a method for reducing emissions in catalytic converter exhaust systems for a vehicle provided with a combustion engine. The invention comprises a control unit adapted to control the air-fuel being fed to the engine so that a high concentration of hydrogen is generated in the exhaust gas during start-up of the engine. Furthermore, secondary air is supplied downstream of the engine during cold starting thereof for foaming a gas mixture with the exhaust gas. This gas mixture is oxidized, so that heat energy generated by means of this oxidation is supplied to the catalyst, thereby providing a reduction of the light-off time of the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 6212882
Abstract: An assembly, a method and a motor vehicle for cleaning ambient air in the vicinity of an internal combustion engine (102) having combustion air inlet means (103) and energy emitting means (104)are disclosed. The assembly (101) further includes adsorbent means (105) for adsorbing at least one pollutant when in a first mode of operation and for desorbing the pollutant when in a second mode of operation. The adsorbent means have an inlet (106) for polluted ambient air (107, 107′) and an outlet (108) for cleaned ambient air (109, 109′). Furthermore, the assembly (101) includes a pollutant conduit (110) through which the desorbed pollutant is transferred from the adsorbent means (105) to the combustion air inlet means (103) when in the second mode of operation, and the adsorbent means (105) are arranged for being brought into the second mode of operation by means of energy supplied from the energy emitting means (104).

  • Patent number: 6122908
Abstract: Apparatus for the purification of exhaust gases from internal combustion engines is disclosed including a conduit for connecting the exhaust pipe from the engine with a canister containing an adsorbent for at least one of the components of the exhaust gases, and a valve associated with the conduit for selectively directing the exhaust gases from the exhaust pipe to the canister when the valve is open. Methods for purification of such exhaust gases are also disclosed including monitoring an operating condition for the internal combustion engine and controlling the flow of the exhaust gases from the engine to the exhaust pipe in response to the monitored operating condition, controlling of the flow including selectively directing at least a portion of the exhaust gases from the exhaust pipe to the canister.

  • Patent number: 5867982
Abstract: The invention relates to a system for reducing emissions in catalytic converter exhaust systems for an internal combustion engine. The invention comprises air-fuel mixture forming means for providing a mixture of air-fuel to the engine, a catalytic converter for purifying an exhaust gas mixture from the engine, and a control unit adapted for controlling the mixture forming means so that an excess of hydrogen is generated in the exhaust gas mixture during the start-up of the engine. According to the invention, the excess of hydrogen is maintained essentially unburnt within the catalytic converter so as to provide a short light-off time for the catalytic converter.
