  • Patent number: 6880238
Abstract: An electrochemical application that utilizes amorphous fluoropolymers providing a membrane electrode assembly that is durable, uniform and possesses a good structural integrity, produced by a method that avoids a long, complicated sintering of the fluoropolymers incorporated at undesirably high temperatures.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 20, 2000
Date of Patent: April 19, 2005
Assignee: E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
    Inventors: Sridhar Kumar, Govindarajulu Rajendran
  • Patent number: 6033804
Abstract: Disclosed is a highly conductive polymer electrolyte membrane and a process for producing it. This invention also describes batteries which employ the polymer electrolyte membrane of this invention.

  • Patent number: 5981097
Abstract: A cation exchange membrane having a laminated structure of at least three layers of cation exchange polymer. In a membrane in accordance with the invention, the cation exchange polymer in the laminate has a polymer backbone and cation exchange groups carried on recurring side chains attached to the polymer backbone with the number of carbon atoms in the polymer backbone in relation to the cation exchange groups defining an ion exchange ratio (IXR) for each layer. The layers have differing IXR values which provide one or more high IXR layers and one or more low IXR layers with the IXR of the low IXR layers being less than about 17 and the IXR of the high IXR layers being at least about 15. In a membrane in accordance with the invention, the high and low layers further provide a change in IXR of at least about 2 in at least two locations across the thickness of the membrane.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 9, 1997
Date of Patent: November 9, 1999
Assignee: E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
    Inventor: Govindarajulu Rajendran
  • Patent number: 5919583
Abstract: Cation exchange membranes, made from polymer having cation exchange groups and containing inorganic filler, exhibit reduced fuel crossover for fuel cells employing direct feed organic fuels such as methanol and, when inorganic proton conductor is employed, enhanced proton conductivity.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 29, 1997
Date of Patent: July 6, 1999
Assignee: E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Walther Gustav Grot, Govindarajulu Rajendran
