  • Patent number: 5326161
Abstract: An elastomeric seating member and an assembly incorporating the same, particularly for solenoid coils of solenoid valves in ABS systems, is provided. The elastomeric seating member (40) provides a moisture resistant seal between a first housing (24) in which first members, such as the solenoid coils (26), are mounted and a second housing (48) in which electronic circuitry, such as the electronic control circuitry (38) for the solenoid valves, is mounted. The elastomeric seating member is mounted within a bore (32, 32a) communicating between the first and second housings and provides a seat for the solenoid coils and is arranged to permit the solenoid coils a limited amount of movement so that when the first housing is mounted on a valve block (20) comprising switch parts (30) of the solenoid valve, the elastomeric seating member permits the movement of the solenoid coils for alignment with the switch parts (30).

  • Patent number: 4696540
Abstract: An optical fibre connector which can be connected or disconnected underwater without contamination of optical fibre termination lenses. When the connector is disconnected, the terminations of each connector element are disposed in respective chambers which are sealed by respective diaphragms. Upon connection the two diaphragms are brought into sealing contact and the terminations of one connector element caused to enter the chamber of the other connector element following penetration of both diaphragms.

  • Patent number: 4603972
Abstract: An instrument for measuring the distance of a body in relative motion away from a datum point measures the optical attenuation of an optical fibre that has an end secured to that datum and extends to the body where the remainder of the fibre is coiled. As the body moves away, so progressively more fibre is uncoiled, and the contribution of bending losses to the total loss is reduced and hence the resulting reduction in attenuation provides a measure of distance travelled.

  • Patent number: 4545108
Abstract: All the layers of the anode foil of an electrolytic capacitor roll (5) are cold welded to a piece of tabbing (8) using radiussed weld tooling (10, 12, 13) which bends the foil layers in the course of the welding operation so as to enable a good weld to be effected. The cathode foil layers are welded to their piece of tabbing in the same way. Optionally the roll may be partially flattened at the time the welds are made.

  • Patent number: 4453520
Abstract: A liquid fuel pumping apparatus includes a centrifugal weight mechanism 14 which is coupled to a fuel control member through a lever. A spring is provided to oppose the action of the weight mechanism and this is coupled through a lever having an adjustable pivot point, to the lever through a closure member carried about an axially movable member coupled to the weight mechanism. A drilling in the member is supplied with liquid under pressure at a restricted rate. The pressure of liquid acts upon the closure member to urge the closure member relative to the member so as to uncover a groove communicating with the drilling. The pressure of liquid in the drilling is controlled so that it varies in accordance with the square of the speed and in the event that the pressure fails the closure member and the axially movable member will move relative to each other to cause a reduction in the fuel supplied by the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4372267
Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus includes a control rod movable in an axial direction to vary the quantity of fuel delivered by the apparatus. A stop member is engageable with a part on the control rod to determine the normal maximum amount of fuel which can be supplied. The stop member can be moved laterally by a first spring to allow an excess of fuel to be supplied. A temperature responsive second spring opposes the action of the first spring, the second spring at normal operating temperature exerting a greater force than the first spring but when cold shrinking to allow movement of the stop member by the first spring.
