    Abstract: Implant devices for filtering blood flowing through the ostium of an atrial appendage have component structures one or more of which are expandable. Devices with component structures in their unexpanded state have a compact size suitable for intra-cutaneous delivery to an atrial appendage situs. The expandable component structures are expanded in situ to deploy the devices. A device may have sufficiently short axial length so that most or almost all of the device length may fit within the ostium region. An expandable component structure in the device may include a blood-permeable filter element. The device may be deployed so that this component structure covers the ostium so as to direct the blood flow to pass through the filter element. The filter elements used in the devices may have hole size distributions selected to filter out harmful-size emboli. The filter elements may be embedded in elastic material so that hole-size distributions remain substantially unaffected by expansion of the device structures.

    Abstract: A rectal thermosensing unit includes, according to one aspect thereof, an elongate member having an inflation lumen extending therethrough. An inflatable balloon is supported by the elongate member. An interior of the inflatable balloon is in fluid communication with the inflation lumen. An insertion lumen extends through the elongate member. An introducer is insertable into the insertion lumen. At least one temperature sensing device is supported by the inflatable balloon. The rectal thermosensing probe is located in a rectum by inserting the introducer into the inflation lumen, inserting the inflatable balloon supported by the elongate member having the introducer inserted in the insertion lumen therein into the rectum, removing the introducer from the insertion lumen, and inflating the inflatable balloon by providing fluid through the inflation lumen.

    Abstract: An integrated optical biopsy forceps device and a method for tissue identification by optical analysis and biopsy sampling at a site within the body. The device includes an elongated catheter body for introduction into the body and navigation to an area of interest. An optical fiber extends through the device, from the proximal end, where it may be connected to electro-optical spectral analysis equipment, to a distal tip for illuminating and receiving light energy from tissue at the location of the tip. The distal end of the device has a pair of cutting jaws pivotally mounted at the distal end of the catheter body and controlled by control wires extending through the catheter body to a control handle at the proximal end, or by the optical fiber. The device may be spectroscopically guided to a site of interest within the body.

    Abstract: A cable comprising helically wound superelastic fibers and having a drilling tip provided at its distal end is housed in an elongated holder through which the cable may be advanced, the holder having a distal end for supporting the cable during a drilling operation and through which the distal end of the cable may protrude. The holder includes contains a cable support shaped to bend the cable through a predetermined angle adjacent its distal end and to support the cable as it is rotated and advanced. A motor is attached to the cable remote from the distal end of the cable to rotate the cable in a direction tending to tighten the cable fibers.

    Abstract: The invention provides a catheter capable of delivering drugs or other fluids to a desired remote location in a bodily passageway, such as a small, tortuous artery. The catheter of the invention includes inner and outer tubular layers, and a continuous helical wire coil disposed between the tubular layers along substantially the entire length of the catheter. To enhance trackability and pushability, the wire coil is constructed to provide regions of differing flexibility to the catheter. The wire coil in a first portion of the catheter has a first coil pitch and the wire coil in a second section of the catheter has a second coil pitch which is larger than the first coil pitch to provide the second section of the catheter with greater flexibility than the first section.

    Abstract: A kink resistant multi-purpose drainage catheter. A drainage catheter is constructed using kink resistant tubing. One end of the kink resistant tube forms a drain for bodily fluids. The opposite end of the kink resistant tube has a molded LUER connector. The drain has numerous holes along its length to allow drainage. The substrate of the kink resistant tube is constructed from an extrusion. The extrusion is then covered with a coil along the body of the catheter. The entire length of the drainage catheter is coated with a final layer of polyurethane. The drain may be formed in a number of desired shapes along with the position of drainage holes.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a hemostasis valve which is formed of a longitudinally extended valve housing having a first opening and a central longitudinal passage communicating with an opposite second opening. A cap means is providied for enclosing the first opening of the housing, said cap means having a hole to permit insertion of a catheter. Also provided is a one-piece seal means located within the longitudinally extended housing, said seal means comprising a sealing neck having a relatively small opening therein and communicating with a sealing chamber having opposing sealing exit lips which are both readily expandable to a diameter less than that of the valve housing upon insertion of a catheter.
