  • Patent number: 7484780
Abstract: A bumper beam for an automobile is disclosed, which has a first set of surfaces and a second set of surfaces. The first set of surfaces is inclined at a pre-defined angle with respect to a pre-defined plane. A plurality of slots is provided on the second set of surfaces of the bumper beam, which facilitates the bumper beam to crush during an impact.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 12, 2006
Date of Patent: February 3, 2009
    Assignee: Chrysler LLC
Inventors: Pratap Atchutha Naick, Madhu Koka, Ronald Scott Kemp, Gregory A. Beecher

  • Patent number: 6938948
Abstract: A method and apparatus for absorbing energy during a frontal collision of a vehicle, through the use of a front frame structure having main frame rails that include several deformable and non-deformable sections which are connected by selectively crushable junctures that are configured to predispose one or more of the junctures and sections to pivot selectively outward, rearward and upward, in a predetermined manner, during the collision. The front frame structure also includes an engine cradle, attached below the main frame rails, and having a pair of side rails that include forward and rear crushable junctures joined by non-deformable intermediate sections, with the crushable junctures of the main frame rails and engine cradle side rails being configured to predispose the intermediate sections of the engine cradle side rails to move downward and rearward during the collision.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 27, 2004
Date of Patent: September 6, 2005
    Assignee: DaimlerChrysler Corporation
Inventors: Troy M Cornell, Gerald F Burke, Harry Gu, Pratap Naick, Mark Kirschmann, Gregory A Beecher, Harjeet Gill, Erin Shipp, Kenneth J Haller, Michael Okuniewicz, Manfred Staisch, Dave Cottrell, Larry Ososki, Norman Hartmann

  • Patent number: 5941600
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mounting an article such as a child seat tether to a vehicle floor comprising a mounting bar, first and second mounting brackets connected to the mounting bar, the brackets capable of connecting to preexisting seat attachment points of a vehicle floor, a plurality of tether attachment points on the mounting bar, and a mounting bar attachable to any of the attachment points.

  • Patent number: 5452916
Abstract: An energy absorbing device for materially reducing steering column motion resulting from passenger compartment intrusion in an automotive vehicle when the powertrain impacts rearward vehicle portions in a frontal collision. The energy absorbing device comprises a bracket in the form of a generally box-shaped frame having side panels and a top panel. The side panels and top panel have openings defining upper and lower struts. The struts are made of a relatively stiff, bendable, flexible material capable of controlled deformation when the powertrain impacts-the rearward vehicle portions in a frontal collision.
