  • Patent number: 6141042
Abstract: To facilitate the measurement of the quality of a video transmission, a bar code is embedded in the top part of the frames of the transmitted video signal to enable identification of each frame. The audio signal may be synchronised with the different bar codes. The bar code may be formed of several blocks in the top of the image, and may be formed of superimposed binary bar codes, each binary bar code being in one color of a color system. This permits measurement of transmission quality, and notably of dropped frames, audio holes, transmission delay, audio and video synchronisation.

  • Patent number: 6105096
Abstract: A simple connection arrangement is provided for inter-communicating a portable computer and a desktop computer. Each computer is provided with a 2:1 optical coupler for transmitting and receiving signals to/from a duplex fiber-optic cable used to interconnect the computers. The cable is unpluggable at one or both ends and avoids crossover problems. A standard protocol can be operated across the link established by the fiber-optic cable. The desktop computer preferably includes functionality enabling communication to be extended into a connected computer network.

  • Patent number: 6098138
Abstract: A communications interface is provided for apparatus such as a desktop computer or printer. The communications interface provides both for connection to a network and connection to a local device that may be a portable computer, the two connections operating according to different protocol schemes. The communications interface permits the local device to communicate both with the main processing functionality of the apparatus and with the network. By providing standby power to the communications interface when the apparatus is switched off, the local device can continue to communicate with remote devices over the network even when the apparatus is off.
