Patent number: 9439786Abstract: A prosthetic ankle module allows for translational and/or rotational movement of a prosthetic foot relative to an adapter. The ankle module can include a four-bar linkage assembly. Links of the linkage assembly can be arranged in various configurations, e.g., parallel or non-parallel and having equal or non-equal lengths, to provide different functions and benefits, e.g., dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, vertical shock absorption, inversion, eversion, and/or rotation about the sagittal axis. Other types of linkage assemblies are also possible. A prosthetic foot can further include a support spring to limit the range of motion of the adapter in use.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2013Date of Patent: September 13, 2016Assignee: Össur hfInventors: Jeroen Nijman, Christophe Lecomte, Grimur Jonsson

Publication number: 20160067063Abstract: A vacuum assisted suspension system includes an elongate compression transfer element and a pump housing. The pump housing defines an enclosed space to receive a fluid. At least one wall of the housing and at least one movable wall define a fluid compartment and a non-fluid chamber. The at least one movable wall is connected to the compression transfer element. The compression transfer element causes the at least one movable wall of the fluid compartment to reciprocate in the fluid compartment to increase the volume of the fluid compartment in response to a compressive force on the compression transfer element and enables the at least one movable wall to decrease the volume of the fluid compartment in the absence of a compressive force.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2015Publication date: March 10, 2016Inventors: Grimur JONSSON, Bjarni GUNNARSSON, Olafur Freyr HALLDORSSON, David SANDAHL

Publication number: 20160051381Abstract: An ankle module for a prosthetic foot can have an adapter portion pivotally coupled to a base portion. The base portion can be coupled to the prosthetic foot. The adapter portion can have a coupling member that removably couples the prosthetic foot to a prosthetic pylon or socket. The adapter portion can also have cylinders housing pistons slidably displaceable within the cylinders. An actuator is selectively actuatable to place the cylinders in fluid communication, allowing a fluid to flow between the cylinders as an angular position of the adapter portion is adjusted relative to the base portion, thereby adjusting the dorsi-plantar position between the adapter portion and the base portion of the ankle module. The actuator can be selectively actuatable to fluidly isolate the cylinders from each other so that the angular position of the adapter portion relative to the base portion remains substantially fixed.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 19, 2015Publication date: February 25, 2016Inventors: Sigurdur Ásgeirsson, David Landry, Sigurdur Olafsson, Grímur Jónsson, Arinbjörn V. Clausen, Gudni Ingimarsson

Patent number: 9198780Abstract: A vacuum assisted suspension system is used to increase or maintain negative pressure or vacuum in a sealed socket cavity as a socket and prosthetic limb attachment mechanism. The system includes a vacuum pump having a housing that defines an enclosed space to receive a fluid. At least one wall of the housing and at least one movable wall define a fluid compartment. The system includes a compression transfer element connected to the at least one movable wall and connected to a prosthetic foot. The compression transfer element causes the at least one movable wall of the fluid compartment to move and increase the volume of the fluid compartment in response to a compressive force on the prosthetic foot to draw in fluid from the prosthetic socket. In the absence of a compressive force, the volume of the fluid compartment decreases thereby expelling fluid out of the fluid compartment.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2013Date of Patent: December 1, 2015Assignee: Ossur hfInventors: Grímur Jonsson, Bjarni Gunnarsson, Ólafur Freyr Halldorsson, David Sandahl

Publication number: 20150328018Abstract: A prosthetic device is configurable between a predetermined shape configuration and a contracted configuration. The prosthetic device includes a resilient body having the predetermined shape configuration and defining a first surface and a second surface opposed to the first surface and separated by a wall thickness. An adjustment device is connected to the resilient body, and at least one elongate element engages at least one of the first and second surfaces and has a first end received by the adjustment device such that the adjustment device is arranged to regulate tension in the at least one elongate element. Tensioning of the at least one elongate element by the adjustment device urges the resilient body to collapse or compress into the contracted configuration, wherein release of tension of the at least one elongate element allows the resilient body to revert to the predetermined shape configuration.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2015Publication date: November 19, 2015Inventor: Grimur JONSSON

Patent number: 9168158Abstract: A prosthetic foot includes a foot member, a heel member operatively coupled to the foot member. At least one of the heel member and foot member define an arch portion that faces a support surface that the prosthetic foot contacts during use. An insole member contacts said arch portion, the insole member configured to facilitate a rollover of the prosthetic foot in at least one of a lateral-medial and a medial-lateral direction during ambulation.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2014Date of Patent: October 27, 2015Assignee: Össur hfInventors: Arinbjorn Viggo Clausen, Grimur Jonsson, Christophe Lecomte
