  • Patent number: 5829761
Abstract: A drill chuck has a body centered on and rotatable about an axis and formed with a plurality of angled guides opening axially forward at a front chuck end and holding respective jaws and radially displaceable jaws each formed with a row of teeth. A metallic inner ring axially fixed but rotatable about the axis on the body has a screwthread meshing with the teeth so that rotation of the inner ring displaces the jaws in their guides. An adjustment sleeve rotatable about the axis on the body has a hard outer part and an inner part of a softer material fixed on the outer part. A metallic intermediate ring fixed on the inner ring has formations coupled to the hard outer part. The inner part rides on the intermediate ring.

  • Patent number: 5765839
Abstract: A drill chuck has a body provided centered on an axis with an annular array of teeth and a plurality of jaws radially displaceable relative to the body between inner and outer positions. A tightening ring is axially fixed but rotatable about the axis on the body in a tightening direction and in an opposite loosening direction and a pair of screwthread formations between the tightening ring and the jaws move the jaws radially together on rotation of the tightening ring in the tightening direction and radially apart on rotation of the tightening ring in the loosening direction. A locking member engageable with the teeth and angularly fixed on the tightening ring is radially displaceable between a locking position engaging the teeth and preventing rotation of the body in the loosening direction and a freeing position permitting free rotation of the body relative to the tightening ring. A setting ring angularly displaceable on the tightening ring is formed with a pair of angularly spaced and radially open seats.

  • Patent number: 4913449
Abstract: A chuck comprises a body centered on an axis and adapted to be mounted on a drill spindle for rotation about the axis and a tightening sleeve carried on the body and rotatable thereon about the axis. The sleeve or body is formed centered on the axis with an array of angularly equispaced guides inclined to the axis and the other element is formed centered on the axis with a screwthread formation. Respective jaws are displaceable axially and radially of the axis in the guides relative to the axis and are formed with teeth meshing with the screwthread so that rotation of the sleeve relative to the body in one rotational sense moves the jaws axially forward and radially together and opposite rotation moves them axially backward and radially apart. A braking sleeve rotatable on the tightening sleeve has an inner surface engageable with the tightening sleeve and this inner surface can be pressed radially into engagement with the tightening sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4103914
Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body carrying a nonrotatable but axially displaceable tightening cone which displaces radially a plurality of angularly equispaced tool-engaging jaws. The tightening cone is axially shifted by a rotatable but axially fixed tightening sleeve threadedly engaging the cone and manually displaceble on the body. This sleeve is connected by a torque-responsive clutch with a rotatable and axially shiftable tightening ring with the chuck slipping after the jaws engage the workpiece to permit relative rotation of the sleeve and the ring. The sleeve and the ring are threadedly interconnected so that further rotation of the ring causes an axial displacement thereof and the ring displaces a piston which pressurizes a cylinder forming a hydraulic cushion for a working piston bearing upon the chuck jaws in the axial direction.

  • Patent number: 4102539
Abstract: A power-actuated chuck comprises a chuck body in which a plurality of chuck jaws are radially displaceable, each jaw having inclined teeth engageable by a substantially linearly displaceable wedge or camming element on the chuck body. A drive ring is connected to all of these wedge members for the joint displacement thereof and is, in turn, actuated by a tangentially displaceable slider which is shifted by an axially displaceable member connected to an axially effective piston-and-cylinder arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4078814
Abstract: A power-actuated chuck has a chuck body provided with a plurality of chuck jaws which can be displaced radially to engage a workpiece. Centrifugal force tending to urge the jaws outwardly is counteracted by respective centrifugal weights at the ends of levers pivotally mounted upon a flange which is affixed to the back of the chuck body. Each weight has a nose which cams a respective pin axially on the body to directly or indirectly apply a radial force to the respective jaw, thereby biasing the same inwardly in accordance with the centrifugal force developed upon rotation of the chuck.

  • Patent number: 4065139
Abstract: A drill chuck of the key or Jacobs type comprising a chuck body guiding a plurality of chuck jaws toward and away from one another with axial displacement of the jaws by a gear ring whose teeth mesh with the Jacobs key. The toothed ring is formed with a groove in which a sleeve into which an inwardly projecting ridge of a sleeve is form-fittingly driven in the assembly of the chuck, the sleeve retaining the ring and another chuck member in axially fixed relation, this other chuck member being provided with an internally threaded bore for mounting upon a drill or other machine tool spindle. Directly opposite the shoulder formed by the groove in the toothed ring, the sleeve is provided with an inwardly open circumferential groove to facilitate plastic deformation of the sleeve into the groove of the ring.

  • Patent number: 4029325
Abstract: In a chuck with a plurality of two-part jaws each jaw has a radial clamping means bearing on mating formations consisting of a dovetail-shaped bar and groove which permit removal of a workpiece-engaging part in a transverse (i.e. tangential) direction.

  • Patent number: 4026566
Abstract: A chuck for lathes and other machine tools has a chuck body provided with axially shiftable wedging members to actuate the jaws, a rotatable guard ring prevents full axial withdrawal of these members from sockets in the jaws in one angular position of the ring. In another angular position of the ring recesses in the latter are aligned with the wedging members to allow the latter to clear the jaws for radial withdrawal and replacement thereof.

  • Patent number: 3938817
Abstract: A chuck has a chuck body adapted to be rotated about an axis and formed with an axial passage having a seat on which three jaws are slidable to grasp a tool shank. A tightening ring is formed on its inner periphery with threads that engage threads on the jaws to displace them axially. A cylindrical sleeve has one end resting on an outside ledge formed on the ring and is deformed at this one end into a groove on the ring which has a sharp edge that bites into the sleeve.
