  • Publication number: 20060202435
Abstract: A chuck has a drive shaft extending along and rotatable about an axis and an adjacent nonrotatable housing part adjacent the drive shaft. A chuck body fixed to the shaft and formed with a plurality of guides holding respective jaws shiftable between closely spaced inner positions and widely spaced outer positions. An adjustment sleeve surrounding the body and coupled to the jaws is rotatable about the axis relative to the body to shift the jaws between their positions. A coupling sleeve engaged between the housing part and the adjustment sleeve can shift between a coupled position rotationally locking the adjustment sleeve to the housing part and a decoupled position permitting rotation about the axis of the adjustment sleeve relative to the housing part. A shield sleeve generally rotationally fixed on the housing part coaxially surrounds at least a portion of the adjustment sleeve and chuck body.

  • Publication number: 20060055127
Abstract: A drill chuck has an externally toothed body, a plurality of jaws, and a tightening ring rotatable on the body in tightening and loosening directions. Screwthreads between the tightening ring and the jaws move the jaws radially. A pawl engageable with the teeth is angularly fixed on the tightening ring and can shift between a retaining position engaging the teeth and a freeing position disengaged from the teeth. An adjustment sleeve is limitedly angularly displaceable on the body relative to the tightening ring between a locked end position and an unlocked end position. A cam on the adjustment sleeve can displace the pawl into the retaining position when the adjustment sleeve is in the locked end position and into the freeing position when the adjustment sleeve is in the unlocked end position. A locking part can engage the pawl in the retaining position thereof to lock the chuck.

  • Patent number: 5503409
Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body centered on and rotatable about an axis and formed with a plurality of jaw guides angularly spaced about the axis and all inclined axially forwardly and with an axially directed annular inner bearing track centered on the axis. Respective jaws in the guides are each formed with a row of teeth that can mesh with a screwthread of an adjustment sleeve generally axially fixed on the body and rotatable on the body in a tightening direction to displace the jaws axially forward and radially toward one another and in an opposite loosening direction to displace the jaws axially backward and radially away from one another.

  • Patent number: 5171030
Abstract: A self-tightening drill chuck adapted to be mounted on a drill spindle for rotation about and reciprocation along the axis of the spindle has a guide body rotatable on the spindle about the axis and formed with a plurality of jaw guides inclined relative to the axis and spaced angularly thereabout and formations axially fixing the guide body on the spindle against substantial relative axial displacement. Respective jaws displaceable in the guides are formed with radially directed teeth meshing with a screwthread of an adjustment body fixed on the spindle against rotation thereon so that rotation of the adjustment body relative to the guide body in one direction displaces the jaws radially toward one another and opposite rotation displaces the jaws radially apart. Further formations secure the adjustment body on the spindle for limited relative axial displacement substantially greater than the relative axial displacement possible between the guide body and the spindle.
