  • Patent number: 5233750
Abstract: The invention is directed to a motor-driven chain saw having a housing and a guide bar extending forward of the housing. The guide bar is clamped between the housing and a sprocket wheel cover. A brake device having a trigger configured as a hand guard is mounted in the sprocket wheel cover. The sprocket wheel is brought to standstill by the brake device when the trigger is actuated. With the sprocket wheel cover assembled, the hand guard is disposed transversely in front of the upper handle of the chain saw. In order to obtain a reliable triggering of the brake device, for example, during kickback and for a manual triggering at all areas of the hand guard, the hand guard is supported in a second bearing on the housing of the chain saw when mounting the sprocket wheel cover. In this way, torques acting in a direction opposite to the actuation of the hand guard are substantially avoided which could otherwise occur because of bearing play.

  • Patent number: 5215049
Abstract: The invention relates to a work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw having an internal combustion engine equipped with an electrical ignition system. Combustion air is supplied via an intake channel and fuel is supplied via a carburetor. The intake channel is provided with a throttle flap and the carburetor with a choke flap. The choke flap is displaceable into a start position by means of an actuating element and a start linkage. In this position, the throttle flap is latched in a pregiven open position. The actuating member for the choke flap is mounted in the forward end portion of a handle attached to the housing and extending in the longitudinal direction thereof. In addition, an operator-actuated lever is configured so as to project outwardly beyond the housing of the handle. Because of this arrangement, the latching between the throttle flap and the choke flap is obtained in a simple manner by latching of the throttle lever journalled in the handle with a switching shaft.

  • Patent number: 5199389
Abstract: The invention in directed to a work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw having a housing and an air-cooled internal combustion engine mounted therein. An exhaust-gas muffler is mounted in proximity to the cylinder of the engine. A flow of cooling air for cooling the cylinder is guided transversely through the housing. In order to obtain an efficient cooling, the muffler has an L-shaped housing and is configured to define a conducting wall for guiding the cooling air flow. One leg of the L-shaped housing is disposed approximately parallel to the flow direction of the cooling air on one side of the cylinder while the other housing leg lies transversely to the flow direction thereby causing the air of the air flow to partially back up. In this way, the side of the cylinder facing away from the flow direction is cooled with the cooling air being effective down to the base of the cooling ribs of the cylinder.
