  • Patent number: 5026709
Abstract: A method for the preparation of a sustained release pharmaceutical composition comprising forming a fluidized ring of said particles and contacting said particles maintained suspended in said ring with a liquid composition containing a pharmaceutically active material and an alkali-soluble material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 7, 1988
Date of Patent: June 25, 1991
    Assignee: Rorer Pharmaceutical Corporation
Inventors: Richard J. Harwood, Gunvant N. Mehta, Ramesh C. Jhawar, Liang-Lii Huang, Wayne M. Grim, Shun P. Li
  • Patent number: 4856909
Abstract: Standardized tests of the dissolution rates of pharmacologic dosage units such as salicylic acid tablets, for example, are conducted by placing the dosage unit in a liquid-permeable cylindrical wire basket and rotating the basket in the solvent about two different axes, preferably one vertical axis and one horizontal axis. The apparatus comprises an outer vertical tube to which the basket is mounted off center from the vertical axis of the tube so that it orbits around the vertical axis when the vertical outer tube is rotated; the basket is mounted on a horizontal shaft which can rotate about its horizontal axis. An inner shaft extends vertically through the outer vertical shaft, and bevel gears are provided between the horizontal shaft and the inner vertical shaft so that relative rotation of the upper ends of the inner and outer vertical shafts with respect to each other about their axes causes the basket to rotate about the horizontal shaft axis.

  • Patent number: 4179497
Abstract: Solid unit dosage medicaments which are suitable for use in animals and humans are prepared with hydroxypropyl cellulose as the primary formulating excipient. These medicaments are particularly suitable for ophthalmic use since they are slowly but completely water soluble when they are inserted in the cul-de-sac of the eye and thus provide for a convenient means of prolonged treatment of the eye with concomitant reduced dosing frequency.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: December 18, 1979
    Assignee: Merck & Co., Inc.
Inventors: Edward M. Cohen, Wayne M. Grim, Richard J. Harwood, Gunvant N. Mehta
  • Patent number: 4173626
Abstract: A sustained release indomethacin pharmaceutical product is provided that utilizes a pellet formulation encapsulated in a hard gelatin capsule. A portion of the pellets is uncoated for immediate and rapid release of indomethacin for elevating the plasma level. The remainder of the pellets are coated with a polymer to sustain the plasma level. The uncoated and coated pellets may be mixed with non-medicated pellets as a capsule filler.
