  • Patent number: 6962135
Abstract: In one aspect of the invention, a system for preventing stall of a vehicle engine is provided. The system includes an integrated starter alternator operably connected with the engine. The integrated starter alternator is capable of selectively operating as a starter motor for transmitting torque to the engine and as an alternator for producing electric energy. The system also includes at least one electric energy storage device in electrical communication with the integrated starter alternator. The system further includes at least one controller in electrical communication with the integrated starter alternator. The system includes at least one sensor operably connected with the engine sending a signal indicative of engine performance to the controller. The controller compares the signal to a predetermined condition indicative of engine stall and controls the electric energy storage device and the integrated starter alternator to transmit a torque to the engine sufficient to prevent engine stall.

  • Patent number: 6781272
Abstract: A vehicle, having an engine (20) and a transmission (26), also includes an integrated assembly (24) between the engine (20) and transmission (26) which includes both a torque converter assembly (32) and an integrated starter-generator (ISG) assembly (36). The ISG assembly (36) is mounted between the torque converter assembly (32) and the transmission (26), with an ISG rotor (56) rotationally coupled to an impeller (42) through an assembly having compliance to allow for proper assembly and operation of the integrated assembly (24).

  • Publication number: 20020138182
Abstract: A control system is provided for the drive system of automotive vehicles. A control determines a combination of torque to be applied from an integrated starter-generator and compression torque to be applied from an engine. The combination of the integrated starter-generator torque and engine compression torque results in a desired deceleration torque. The control preferentially applies torque from the integrated starter-generator over the compression torque, thus maximizing regeneration.

  • Patent number: 6356042
Abstract: An engine shut off system for a hybrid electric vehicle includes an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, and a controller. The internal combustion engine is located in the hybrid electric vehicle and is coupled to the electric motor. The vehicle system controller is coupled to the internal combustion engine and may automatically shut off or start the internal combustion engine. When the hybrid electric vehicle is completely stopped the controller shuts the internal combustion engine off after a configurable period of time.

  • Patent number: 6322476
Abstract: A system (40) for an automotive vehicle (10) has an internal combustion engine (12) having a crankshaft (50) and a starter/alternator (42) coupled to the crankshaft (50). A transmission (26) is coupled to the starter/alternator (42). A gear position sensor (70) coupled to the transmission (26) generates a gear change signal. A controller (54) is coupled to the starter/alternator (42) and the gear position sensor (70) and receives the gear change signal. The controller (54) initiates the operation of the starter/alternator (42) as a motor to provide a predetermined torque.
