Patent number: 6006100Abstract: Portable measuring devices which communicate by low power transceivers through a communication controller with a printer device collect weight and size data on articles to be shipped. The collected weight and size data are combined with origin and destination data, and labels are printed bearing pertinent shipping and routing information in machine readable format. The labels are attached to the articles to be shipped and accompany the articles to their respective destinations. At transfer points the labels are read by scanner devices which also communicate by low power transceiver links with the communication controller. The wireless linking of the scanner devices promotes human safety by the absence of cords which could cause entanglement of an operator in mechanized conveying equipment. The communication controllers at each stage of the shipping process have the capability of transferring received and updated status information on the shipped articles to a central data station.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1994Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Steven E. Patent number: 5949776Abstract: A hierarchical communication system is described in which wireless local area networks (LANs) exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices. In a premises LAN, a series of radio base stations and a backbone LAN make up an infrastructure network. The infrastructure network and at least one mobile computing device make up a higher-power LAN, utilizing a frequency hopping protocol. A lower-power LAN allows for radio communication between a mobile computing device and peripheral devices, utilizing a single-frequency spread spectrum protocol. A vehicular LAN provides for short-range communication between a vehicle terminal and a portable terminal. When out of direct RF range of the premises LAN, the vehicle terminal maintains indirect communication when necessary with the premises LAN via one of several alternate RF channels.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1997Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Ronald L. Patent number: 5940771Abstract: A data collection network supports roaming terminals which may enter and exit a sleep mode to conserve power. A plurality of base stations each periodically transmit pending message indications to those roaming data collection terminals in range. Instead of requiring the transceiver within each terminal to always be active, the receiver is activated in synchrony with the transmissions of pending message indications from at least one of the base stations. Otherwise, the terminal may deactivate the transceiver, i.e., place it in a sleep state. The terminal may also sleep through pluralities of transmissions of pending message indications, and, thereafter, awake in synchrony to receive subsequent pending message indications. To minimize noise, the terminal may operate using a lower frequency system clock when not collecting data. When collecting data, especially where processing time proves more critical, the system clock frequency is increased.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1995Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Charles D. Patent number: 5870279Abstract: A computer device for receiving and utilizing a radio card. The radio transceiver is self contained inside the radio card and has antenna contacts disposed on the radio card on one end and an electrical interface on the other. The computer device receives the radio card such that it engages the electrical interface. The computer device additionally has and cap which covers the opening into which the radio has been inserted. Antenna contacts are disposed on the cap to engage the antenna contacts on the radio card. At least one antenna is operably connected to the radio card through the cap. A band is used to attach the cap to the housing of the computer device. The antenna or antennas are embedded in the cap, in the band, or embedded in or attached to the housing of the computer device. Positioning two similar antennas in different position creates an antenna diversity scheme. Shielding can be added to the cap to help reduce the escape of electronic noise.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Ronald L. Patent number: 5680633Abstract: Modular, portable data collection terminals are disclosed for use in mixed wireless and hard-wired RF communication networks, wherein various radio transmitter modules and associated antennas may be selectively added to a base terminal unit to solve networking problems associated with specific types of business environments. Modularity exists in both the hardware (splitting data collection and processing control circuitry from radio transceiver control circuitry) and software (splitting transceiver-specific, lower level communication protocol from generic, higher level communication protocol). The control circuitry, including associated microprocessors devices, interact to selectively activate communication circuits to perform necessary communication or data processing functions and enter and remain in a power-saving dormant state during other times. To support such dormant or "sleeping" states, a series of communication protocols provide for channel access to the communication network.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1993Date of Patent: October 21, 1997Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Steven E. Patent number: 5483676Abstract: In an exemplary embodiment, a base station maintains RF communication with mobile units using a polling protocol which may communicate at a higher or lower data rate, depending on the channel conditions. The base station transmits a general polling message at the lower data rate, and, associated therewith, transmits a test pattern for evaluation by the mobile units. Upon receipt of the transmissions, the mobile units analyze the test pattern to determine whether communication at the higher data rate is possible. Based on the determination, the mobile units select the appropriate rate to transmit data messages. The test pattern can be associated with a query from a mobile unit having a message to send, or with a contention polling message from the base.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1994Date of Patent: January 9, 1996Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Ronald L. Mahany, Marvin L. Sojka, Guy J. West

Patent number: 5070536Abstract: In an exemplary embodiment, a test signal is sent by a base station at a suitable point in a communications protocol. According to the evaluation of the test signal transmission, a relatively high data rate or a lower more conservative data rate is selected by a mobile unit for the transmission of a relatively lengthy data message. The test signal can be associated with a query from a mobile unit having a message to send, or with a contention polling message from the base. Such test signal can be transmitted at the lower data rate where its transmission characteristics (e.g. signal strength, jitter or quality of transmission of known information) can be used to predict probable feasibility of transmission at the higher data rate, but most preferably the test signal is part of a high data rate contention poll which may alternate with a low data rate contention poll.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1989Date of Patent: December 3, 1991Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Ronald L. Mahany, Marvin L. Sojka, Guy J. West
