  • Publication number: 20130226155
Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing, and a shaft including a proximal end, a deflectable portion and a distal tip. A handle is movable between first and second positions on the housing, and an actuator is movably coupled to the handle, such that movement of the handle between its first and second positions causes a corresponding movement of the actuator between first and second positions in the housing. A deflection wire includes proximal and distal portions, the distal portion being fixed to the shaft, and the proximal portion being affixed to the housing so as to provide a path length for the deflection wire within the housing. The movement of the handle causes the actuator to move to its second position, the second position of the actuator causing an increase in the path length for the deflection wire so as cause a deflection of the distal tip of the shaft.

  • Publication number: 20130150849
Abstract: An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical instrument and an electrosurgical generator, the instrument having a longitudinal axis and including at least first, second and third electrodes. The electrodes are spaced from each other by one or more insulating members therebetween, the spacing between the first and third electrodes being greater than that between the first and second electrodes. The electrosurgical generator includes a source of radio frequency energy capable of producing either a coagulating RF waveform or a cutting RF waveform and has first second and third output connections connected to the first, second and third electrodes respectively of the electrosurgical instrument. The generator further includes a switching means, and a controller, the controller being such that when a cutting RF waveform is selected, the switching means directs the cutting RF waveform between the first and second output connections and hence the first and second electrodes.

  • Publication number: 20130138096
Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a housing, an end effector carried by the housing, and one or more connections adapted to connect the surgical instrument to a controller such as an electrosurgical generator. The housing includes a plurality of handswitches located at different rotational positions around the housing. The handswitches comprise two handswitch sets the handswitches of each set being connected in to common so as to send the same signal to the controller whichever one of the handswitches is activated. In this way a user of the surgical instrument can send signals to the controller using any of the handswitches within a particular set, depending on the orientation of the surgical instrument.

  • Publication number: 20130131666
Abstract: An endoscopic surgical instrument includes a stationary component, an elongate shaft extending from the stationary component, and an end effector located at the distal end of the shaft. The stationary component includes at least one contact portion adapted to be engaged by the fingers of a user, the instrument also including a movable component including a contact portion adapted to be engaged by the thumb of a user. Longitudinal movement between the contact portions of the movable component and the stationary component cause the movable component to move longitudinally with respect to the stationary component between a first proximal position, a second distal position, and a third position, the third position being distal of the second position by a relatively small distance. The movement of the movable component between the first and second positions causes a corresponding movement of the end effector between corresponding first and second positions.

  • Publication number: 20130090644
Abstract: An electrosurgical apparatus for coagulating tissue comprises an elongate tube (3) having a proximal end and a distal end, and having a distal end face (12). The tube comprises one or more first apertures (14) located at the distal end face (12) and one or more second apertures (13) located along the periphery of the tube between the proximal and distal ends. The tube provides a conduit though which ionizable gas can be supplied to the distal end of the tube, and includes at least one electrode (4) for ionizing the ionizable gas exiting either the first or second apertures.

  • Publication number: 20130090643
Abstract: An electrosurgical apparatus for coagulating tissue comprises an elongated tube (3) having a proximal end and a distal end, and constituting a conduit though which ionisable gas can be supplied to the distal end of the tube. The tube (3) includes one or more apertures (9) in the tube such that the ionisable gas is capable of exiting the tube in a plurality of different directions. The tube includes at least one electrode (4) for ionising the ionisable gas exiting the one or more apertures, and a shield (11) associated to with the tube (3) and movable so as to obscure at least part of the one or more apertures (9) so as to vary the direction or directions in which the ionised gas exits the tube.
