Patent number: 8498207Abstract: A method, program, system and apparatus perform dynamic load balancing of coverage areas in a wireless communication network. The dynamic load balancing is performed by evaluating cell congestion based on location information of subscribers in the wireless communication network, collecting network parameters related to the wireless communication network and altering network parameters based on the evaluated cell congestion. After the network parameter is altered, the coverage areas are narrowed. Improvements in cell congestion and quality of server are then determined based on the narrowing of the coverage areas. Altering of the plurality of network parameters and evaluating of the cell congestion are performed continuously until a target quality of service is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2009Date of Patent: July 30, 2013Assignee: Reverb NetworksInventors: Hafedh Trigui, Rick Cuthill, Richard Glenn Kusyk

Publication number: 20130181880Abstract: A low profile wideband multi-beam integrated dual polarization antenna array with compensated mutual coupling effect. Instead of suppressing mutual coupling with post-element-design techniques by attempting to block the reflections between elements, an element of the array is designed using its active impedance, i.e. its impedance with mutual coupling once the element is part of the array. The active impedance is determined using various simulation techniques and the element is then designed such that its impedance is shifted in order to modify its active impedance. This technique does not reduce the mutual coupling itself but instead, compensates for the mutual coupling effect and improves the return loss of the element.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 17, 2012Publication date: July 18, 2013Inventors: Lin-Ping SHEN, Hafedh TRIGUI, Stuart James DEAN, Bing YAN

Patent number: 8311582Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing capacity and performance of a base station for a sectorized cellular wireless network is disclosed in which one of the sector antennas is replaced or supplanted by a novel sub-sector antenna that generates a plurality of asymmetrical sub-sector coverage areas that collectively substantially cover the coverage area of the replaced sector antenna. The use of asymmetrical coverage areas permits the total coverage area to closely approximate the symmetrical sector coverage area without creating excessively large sub-sector handover zones or introducing severe degradation in the network performance. This in turn permits the selective replacement of a single sector antenna rather than the wholesale replacement of all sector antennas in a region, leading to lower transitional costs and the ability to provide a focused approach to capacity planning.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2007Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: TenXc Wireless Inc.Inventors: Hafedh Trigui, Stuart J. Dean, John Litva

Publication number: 20110312335Abstract: A cellular location method is used in a cellular location system including a database. The cellular location method obtains radio measurements from a user terminal located in the communications network, extracts information from the obtained radio measurements, determines the location of the user terminal based on the extracted information, and stores the determined location of the user terminal and the extracted information as an entry in the database such that the determined location of the user terminal is retrieved based upon a matching score between the extracted information from the user terminal and extracted information from the specified user terminal. Additionally, when the determined location of the user terminal is retrieved based upon the matching score, the location of the specified user terminal is determined to be the determined location of the user terminal.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 2010Publication date: December 22, 2011Inventors: Jun LIU, Hafedh Trigui, Richard Cuthill

Method and apparatus for adaptive beamforming in an antenna array system for wireless communications
Patent number: 7756227Abstract: A novel system for performing adaptive beamforming in a slow frequency hopping environment is disclosed. The presence of slow frequency hopping means that conventional mechanisms of using beamforming weights from previous time slots are inapplicable. The inventive system calculates a series of beamforming weights from an estimate of the spatial location of the mobile subscriber in the previous frame, which is impervious to slow frequency hopping and the data that precedes the training sequence data of the current frame. The beamforming weights and the spatial location of the mobile are updated with the arrival of the entirety of the current frame. The initial beamforming weight estimate is sufficient to permit processing on a real-time basis of the current frame even if the inventive system is implemented as an appliqué system interposed between the antenna array and a conventional base station.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2007Date of Patent: July 13, 2010Assignee: TenXc Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Shiwei Gao, Hafedh Trigui -

Publication number: 20080267063Abstract: A method and apparatus of imparting coverage gain to cell-edge or cusp mobile subscribers without resort to diluted frequency reuse factors is disclosed. Each base station adopts a priori a beam illumination sequence designed to minimize or obviate the likelihood of beam clashes in a narrow beam adaptive beamforming system. Such sequences may be optimized to impact primarily cell-edge subscribers or subscribers within cusp areas of adjoining beams or sectors. The inventive protocols may be applicable to fixed multibeam systems as well as individual steered beam and spatial null generation antenna systems.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2007Publication date: October 30, 2008Inventors: Hafedh Trigui, Kathryn Adeney, Chris Ward, Keith Wilson

Patent number: 7429949Abstract: A method and system for generating beamforming weights for a plurality of antenna elements is disclosed. The invention consists of generating broadened nulls in a direction of arrival corresponding to one or more co-channel interference signals. The broadened nulls permit deviations in the measurement of the direction of arrival or variations therein. The increased information content inherent in generating the broadened nulls is accommodated by postulating the existence of a virtual augmented antenna array comprising the antenna elements of the physical array and a plurality of additional virtual elements. The beamforming weights for the elements of the augmented array are truncated down prior to translation to the size of the physical array and are applied to create the desired broadened nulls and thereby improve system performance.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2007Date of Patent: September 30, 2008Assignee: TenXc Wireless Inc.Inventor: Hafedh Trigui

Publication number: 20070285312Abstract: A system and method of providing an adaptive multi-beam capability to a wireless base transceiver station is disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of transmit and receive antenna arrays and a plurality of static beamformers to form a limited number of beams. The beam data is reduced to digital baseband form whereupon it is digitally beamformed using a set of adaptive beamforming weights generated having regard to the form and content of the data and the environment. Such form and content information is obtained directly or indirectly from the base transceiver station. The weights are calculated using an average power function derived from a correlation of the beam data with a reference signal that mimics the training sequence assigned to the base transceiver station. Because the average power does not vary widely from frame to frame, the weights derived from the uplink direction may be reapplied in the downlink direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2007Publication date: December 13, 2007Inventors: Shiwei Gao, Hafedh Trigui

Publication number: 20070258411Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing adaptive null steering in a slow frequency hopping environment. Where base stations have smart beamforming antenna capability and are interconnected by a base station controller, thus accommodating cyclic and pseudo-random frequency hopping, each base station forwards information on arrival time, frequency and received power of all subscriber communications and co-channel interferers to the controller for correlation. Periodicity information relating to co-channel interferers is returned to the applicable base station, to enable the generation of a null in the direction of arrival of the interferer. Where few base stations have smart beamforming capability, frequency hopping is cyclic only, and each base station generates its own periodicity information. Base stations may also calculate direction of arrival and time of arrival information, and forward this to the controller, if applicable.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2007Publication date: November 8, 2007Inventor: Hafedh Trigui
