Abstract: A system and method for updating software in an information handling system are disclosed. One or more relationships between a firmware package and a set of components associated with the information handling system are generated. A first storage partition identifier is generated based, at least in part, on the relationships. A second storage partition identifier generate is based, at least in part, on one or more parameters of the set of components, where the second storage partition identifier is associated with the first storage partition identifier. A first storage partition having the first storage partition identifier is generated. A second storage partition having the second storage partition identifier is generated. A copy of the firmware information is stored so that the firmware information is associated with the second storage partition. Firmware for at least one of the set of components is modified based, at least in part, on firmware information.

Abstract: An information handling system has the capability of securing serial console redirection via serial-over-LAN (SOL) by using a baseboard management controller (BMC) and a baseboard serial controller. The BMC may be coupled to the baseboard serial controller over a DCD and/or GPIO bus. De-assertion of the data carriage detect (DCD) signal from the BMC to the baseboard serial controller may cause the OS console to logout the user session. If the BMC does not support a DCD signal then a general purpose input-output (GPIO) signal from the BMC may be used instead. Most operating system (OS) consoles will logout a user session when a de-asserted DCD (or GPIO) signal is detected.

Abstract: A profiling program or function can determine functionality, e.g. which commands and/or command parameters are supported, of a platform management subsystem. Information about the system's functionality can be provided to instrumentation code, presentation layer software applications, or the like, allowing an intelligent determination about which platform management options to expose to a system's user.
