The liquid crystal material has a pitch length effective to reflect radiation having a wavelength in both the visible and the infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum at intensity that is sufficient for viewing by an observer. One liquid crystal material may be disposed in a single region or two or more liquid crystal materials may be used, each in separate regions even without the infrared reflecting layer. One aspect of the invention is directed to a photolithography method for patterning a substrate of the display.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2003Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Kent Displays, Inc.Inventors: Asad A. Patent number: 6317189Abstract: A reflective display comprises a pair of substrates and a holographic polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal (HPDCLC) material formed between the substrates. The holographic polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal material comprises a holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal material and a cholesteric liquid crystal material. These two materials reflect one or more different intrinsic colors such that individual cells of the display can reflect one or more different intrinsic colors. The cells can comprise more than two layers, with each layer being reflective of a different intrinsic color. The cells in such embodiments can reflect three different intrinsic peak wavelengths and one or more intrinsic colors, enabling the display to reflect all colors.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1998Date of Patent: November 13, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Haiji Yuan, Thomas G. Fiske, Louis D. Silverstein

Patent number: 6166800Abstract: A full-color image capture system includes a color separation element and a single image sensor array. The color separation element can be operated in either a light reflective (mirror) mode in which selected intrinsic colors are reflected onto the image sensor array, or a light transmissive (filter) mode in which selected colors are transmitted to produce subtractive primary color images. The color separation element can be formed of holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal materials that reflect light of selected intrinsic colors. The color separation element can include three holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal material layers so that three different intrinsic colors can be selectively reflected or transmitted onto the image sensor to provide a full-color image.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Louis D. Silverstein, Thomas G. Fiske, Haiji Yuan
