Patent number: 7886422Abstract: A method is provided for reclaiming a suspension from a disk drive head gimbal assembly (HGA). An ultrasonic probe is applied to the HGA's read/write head slider on a side opposite that of its solder balls. Ultrasonic oscillations are transmitted through the ceramic slider to the side with the solder balls. The oscillations break the brittle intermetallic compound of the slider balls and free the slider. The ultrasonic energy also weakens the epoxy adhesive between the slider and suspension. The method can be used with heat to further weaken the solder balls and adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2008Date of Patent: February 15, 2011Assignee: Magnecomp CorporationInventors: Haiming Zhou, Haijun Gao, Fei He

Patent number: 6765759Abstract: A system and a method for increasing suspension resonance frequencies of a head suspension assembly of a disc drive includes, in one example embodiment, attaching a base plate to an actuator arm assembly of the disc drive such that the base plate including the actuator arm assembly are in actuating relationship with a rotating disc of the disc drive. A two-piece suspension member having a first and second pieces is attached to the base plate. A gimbal is attached to the two-piece suspension member such that a predetermined bendable area is formed between the first and second pieces and on the gimbal having a stiffer preload bend radius. A stiffer preload bend radius provides a higher stiffness-to-mass ratio without increasing the spring rate of the head suspension assembly to increase suspension resonance frequencies of the head suspension assembly to fall outside a bandwidth of a servo drive to reduce off-track motion of the head suspension assembly during track follow-and-seek operations of the disc drive.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2001Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Sandeepan Bhattacharya, Kevin Jon Schulz, Haiming Zhou, David G. Patent number: 6271996Abstract: A head suspension includes a damping structure having at least one unconstrained surface. A reservoir is formed on the head suspension preferably from epoxy resin. Visco-elastic damping material is dispensed into the reservoir to form a damper on the head suspension. The damper and reservoir act to damp resonance mode vibrations of the head suspension.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1997Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Hutchinson Technology IncorporatedInventors: Galen D. Houk, Haiming Zhou

Patent number: 6005750Abstract: A head suspension includes a damper having a constraint layer formed unitarily with the flexure. The damper is located on the same face of the load beam as the flexure and acts to damp resonance vibrations of the head suspension. The constraint layer overlays the damper and is coupled to the flexure by a narrow neck. In this way, the constraint layer can be aligned and attached to the beam along with the flexure. This facilitates alignment of the constraint layer. Further, the narrowness of the neck coupling the constraint layer to the flexure reduces transmission of vibrations from the load beam to the flexure.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1997Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Hutchinson Technology IncorporatedInventors: Daniel D.
