  • Patent number: 7636123
Abstract: This invention has as its object to precisely detect the face of a person from a captured image even in a situation with an insufficient brightness (e.g., when an image of a person is to be photographed to have a nightscape as a background). To this end, an image capturing apparatus detects, on the basis of a captured image based on pre-light emission, a face area in the captured image, determines a light control area of a flash in the captured image including an object in accordance with the detected face area, calculates a main light emitting amount in accordance with a photometry value based on the pre-light emission in the determined light control area, and photographs an image by controlling the flash on the basis of the calculated main light emitting amount.

  • Patent number: 7272304
Abstract: An image sensing device allows to shoot an image using correct object distance information and light emitting amount when the main light emitting amount upon shooting an object image is calculated by making the pre-light emission after the auto-focusing process. When a predetermined button independent of a release button is operated, a focusing process is executed first. Then, photometry is made while inactivating a strobe, and an exposure value is determined based on an object distance. Then, pre-light emission is made, light reflected by the object in the pre-light emission is measured, and the photometry result under the available light is subtracted from that in the pre-light emission, so as to obtain a brightness value of object reflected light of only the pre-light emission.

  • Publication number: 20070019097
Abstract: An image-pickup apparatus is disclosed which ensures a wide range of photometric measurement in an electronic observation state and allows a reduced release time lag in image-pickup operation with flashing. The image-pickup apparatus includes an optical-path switching member, a shutter which controls the amount of exposure light to an image-pickup device, a first light-receiving element, and a control unit which disposes the optical-path switching member to a second position and opens the shutter to allow electronic observation of an object with an electronic display device, and controls light emission of a flash unit which illuminates the object. When image-pickup operation with flashing is performed in an electronic observation state, the control unit closes the shutter before the image-pickup operation with flashing, and sets an amount of light emission of the flash unit based on an output from the first light-receiving element which receives light reflected by the shutter.

  • Patent number: 6928239
Abstract: Strobe light emission is controlled with precision with precision of distance information. A photometry unit measures light reflected by an object to be photographed by preliminary emission in a collection of divided regions. An object distance detection unit detects an object distance. A distance precision determination unit determines a distance precision. A first calculation unit calculates a proper photometry level from an object distance. A second calculation unit calculates an identification level for identifying an abnormal reflection region on the basis of the proper photometry level and a distance precision. A determination unit compares the photometry values of the divided regions with the identification level, thereby determining an abnormal reflection region. A third calculation unit calculates the photometry values of reflected object light in the divided regions from which the abnormal reflection region is excluded.
