Publication number: 20230379624Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices having speakers. An electronic device may include speaker control circuitry for a speaker. The speaker control circuitry may include multiple parallel prediction blocks that share a single look-ahead delay, and that feed, in parallel, a single controller. The single controller can generate a joint modification to an audio signal based on the parallel outputs of the prediction blocks. The joint modification can then be applied to the audio signal to generate a speaker-protection audio signal that can be output by the speaker. The speaker control circuitry may also include a system modeler that models the speaker system of the electronic device based on feedback measured physical characteristics. In this way, a reduced control safety margin can be achieved by more accurate model predictors, which can allow the controller to safely drive the speaker system to its full capability.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2022Publication date: November 23, 2023Inventors: Thomas M. Patent number: 10848859Abstract: A method for mitigating noise caused by a loudspeaker in an audio device. The method obtains an audio signal for driving the loudspeaker. The method obtains a system model of the audio device that represents a modeled physical characteristic of the audio device, and determines whether a noise level of loudspeaker induced acoustic noise is greater than a desired sound level by analyzing the audio signal according to the system model, where the noise level and the desired sound level are characterized at the listener's position in an acoustic environment. The method, in response to determining that the noise level is greater than the sound level, processes the audio signal to cause a reduction of the noise level.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2019Date of Patent: November 24, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Hannes Breitschaedel, Thomas M. Patent number: 10469044Abstract: A power mitigation algorithm in a loudspeaker amplification system that includes a loudspeaker driver, an audio amplifier, and a constant output power, power supply. A power requirement for the amplifier to output an audio signal is determined. A gain adjustment signal is then determined based on a difference between the power requirement and a power budget of the amplifier. Gain of the audio signal is adjusted according to the gain adjustment signal, for output through the loudspeaker driver. As a result, a peak level of the power consumption of the amplifier while outputting the gain-adjusted audio signal becomes less than the power budget. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2017Date of Patent: November 5, 2019Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: James M. Hollabaugh, Hannes Breitschaedel, David A. Patent number: 10382857Abstract: An audio electronics system operates on audio data. A low-pass or bandpass filter produces first data from audio data. A level detector produces a time-varying first gain. The first gain is based on a time-varying level of the first data. A harmonics generator receives, as input, the first data adjusted by an inverse of the first gain. The harmonics generator produces second data, as harmonics of the input. A multiplier outputs the second data adjusted by the first gain. Other aspects are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2018Date of Patent: August 13, 2019Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Sarthak Khanal, Hannes Breitschaedel, Vasu Iyengar

Patent number: 9491541Abstract: An electronic device for buzz reduction is described. The electronic device is to be used with a speaker driver that is built onto an enclosure and is to be driven by an audio signal which could cause the enclosure to produce buzz. The electronic device includes a filter that is to attenuate a frequency component of the audio signal before driving the speaker driver. The electronic device also includes a controller that is to configure the filter to attenuate the frequency component of the audio signal in response to determining that strength of the audio signal at the frequency component exceeds a threshold. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2014Date of Patent: November 8, 2016Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Hannes Breitschaedel, Aram M. Lindahl, Justin D. Crosby

Patent number: 8130126Abstract: The system converts an analog input signal into a digital output signal while avoiding interference, such as clipping. The system derives two signal components having differing signal magnitude levels from the analog input signal. The signal components are subjected to independent analog to digital conversion, such as through low resolution analog to digital converters. The system determines weighting factors for the two signal components based on at least one property of at least one of the signal components, such as the level of at least one of the signal components. The signal components are weighted. The weighted signal components are merged.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2010Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: AKG Acoustics GmbHInventors: Hannes Breitschädel, Sabine Ferdan

Patent number: 7295628Abstract: A stereo multiplex encoder (MPX) for FM transmission with a digital signal processor utilizes residual sideband modulation in stereo transmission instead of the conventional double sideband modulation. The adjustment of the sampling frequency to the modulation frequency (fmod=fs/2) is carried out, so that the antialiasing filter of the DAC can be used which produces the residual sideband modulated signal.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2002Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: AKG Acoustics GmbHInventors: Hannes Breitschädel, Peter Schlager
