  • Patent number: 5873190
Abstract: A prismatic container is used for insertion into a notch in an element in order to release a chemical agent from a container volume into the element. The container includes a plurality of first sides inclined outwardly relative to each other from at least one junction. These first sides form lateral sides of the container. A pair of second sides, parallel to each other, form longitudinal ends of the container. At least one of the first and second sides forms at least part of a cap for closing off an opening which provides access to the container volume for storage of the chemical agent. The second sides are formed of a biodegradable material which dissolves in order to release the chemical agent. Pyramidal and conical container configurations can also be utilized.

  • Patent number: 5505021
Abstract: A capsule for insertion into a bore includes a plastic container having a shank portion with one internal cavity having at least one end opening. The one internal cavity contains one chemical agent. A head element is integrally formed with the shank portion. A plastic plug sealingly closes the internal cavity. The plug is insertable into an end opening of the one internal cavity so as to provide a tight fit between the plug and the end opening. Another internal cavity is defined so as to be isolated from the one internal cavity. The other internal cavity is partially defined by a thin membrane forming a closed end of the plug and contains another chemical agent. A spear, integrally formed with the plastic container, pierces the thin membrane as an impact force applied to the head element moves the head element towards the plastic plug so that communication between the internal cavities is provided.

  • Patent number: 5485698
Abstract: A tree treatment capsule is disclosed as including a plastic container having a shank with an internal cavity for containing therein a chemical agent and a head integrally formed with the shank portion. A plastic plug is provided to sealingly close the cavity. The shank has a plurality of slots which are formed in the exterior surface thereof and extend lengthwise of the shank. The slots allow the shank to be broken so that when an impact force is applied to the head to move the head towards the plastic plug, the plastic plug expands and breaks the shank along the slots into strips to form passages between the strips. The passages allow the chemical agent to pass from the cavity of the capsule through the passages and mix with sap of the tree.

  • Patent number: 5471784
Abstract: A gas dispensing tap is designed for insertion into a tree bore. The tap includes a hollow container having a side wall, an open end and a closed end. A plug head closes off the open end of the hollow container to define a primary cavity within the hollow container including a first chemical agent. In one embodiment of the invention, the plug head includes a bore or passage provided therein for communicating an interior of the tree bore with an outside of the plug head. A stopper is received in an opening to a secondary cavity in the plug head and closes off the secondary cavity. The secondary cavity contains a second chemical agent. The stopper is moved into the secondary cavity as an impact force is applied to the stopper and combines the first and second chemical agents so that a gas, generated by combination of the chemical agents, diffuses through the side wall and stimulates the flow of sap.

  • Patent number: 5459961
Abstract: A capsule for treating a tree or other wooden element is disclosed as including a head element having a shank portion with an internal cavity containing a chemical agent. The internal cavity is sealed by a plug in an end of the shank portion remote from the head element. The head element, shank portion, chemical agent and plug form a self-contained unit which is inserted into a pre-drilled or pre-punched hole in the tree or other wooden element. The shank portion is made of a frangible material so that upon breaking as a result of an impact force applied to the head element, the chemical agent is free to be absorbed into the tree or other wooden element.

  • Patent number: 5425201
Abstract: A capsule for insertion into a bore includes a hollow head section having a first diameter, a hollow shank, extending along a central axis of the capsule and having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, interconnected with the head section by a hollow tapered transitional section, and a cap received within the head section. The cap defines, together with inner surfaces of the shank, the transitional section and the end face, a capsule volume for storing a chemical agent. The capsule is insertable into the bore so that when the capsule is inserted into the bore, the distal edge portion of the shank end face abuts an end wall of the bore. The shank is frangible so that when a force is applied to the head section, causing the head section to at least partly move into the bore, the distal edge portion translates the force into a stress which breaks the shank to release the chemical agent from the capsule volume.

  • Patent number: 5287992
Abstract: A method for treating a tree comprises the steps of punching at least one hole in a trunk of a tree and injecting an individual chemical pellet directly into the at least one hole. The chemical pellet dissolves in and mixes with sap of the tree to treat the tree. A dispenser for injecting the pellets and a punch hammer for punching holes in the tree, both of which are used in the tree treating method, are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5207021
Abstract: A tree treatment capsule is disclosed as including a plastic container having a shank with an internal cavity for containing therein a chemical agent and a head integrally formed with the shank portion. A plastic plug is provided to sealingly close the cavity. The shank has a plurality of scorings which are formed in the exterior surface thereof and extend lengthwise of the shank The scorings allow the shank to be broken so that when an impact force is applied to the head to move the shank towards the plastic plug, the plastic plug expands and breaks the shank along the scorings into tongues to form slits between the tongues. The slits allow the chemical agent to pass from the cavity of the capsule through the slits and mix with sap of the tree.
