  • Publication number: 20100053830
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mitigating dynamic overvoltage (DOV) in an AC network. A distribution and power transformer has its primary connected to the high voltage bus of the network and its secondary connected to a switching device. Upon the occurrence of a condition known to cause a DOV and the DOV a control system cause the switching device to change from a nonconductive mode to a conductive mode in less than the time for one cycle of the operating frequency of the AC network. This change in switching device conduction places a short circuit across the transformer secondary.

  • Publication number: 20090219737
Abstract: An HVDC transmission system including a rectifier station and an inverter station each having a series connection of at least two converters. A by-pass DC breaker is connected in parallel with each converter. A control device is adapted to deblock a blocked converter by starting to control the converter at high delay angle and gradually decreasing the delay angle until substantially all DC current flows through the converter and to then control the by-pass breaker to open at substantially zero current, and to stop the operation of a converter by controlling the converter at gradually increasing delay angle until the voltage across the converter is substantially zero and to then control the converter to be blocked by firing a by-pass pair thereof and to then control the by-pass breaker to close for taking over all the DC current when the voltage between a neutral bus and a pole of a transmission line between the stations is to be increased and reduced, respectively.

  • Patent number: 6411067
Abstract: A device and a method for controlling the flow of electric power in a transmission line carrying alternating current, in which a first voltage source converter is connected to the transmission line at a first point and a second voltage source converter is connected to the transmission line at a second point. Further, the first and second voltage source converters have their direct current sides connected to a common capacitor unit. Also included is a by-pass switch connected to the transmission line between the first point and the second point in parallel with the first and second voltage source converters so that the first and second voltage source converters will operate as a back-to-back station when the by-pass switch is open and as two parallel static var compensators when the by-pass switch is closed.

  • Patent number: 6205039
Abstract: A device in a valve on high voltage potential level and in a high voltage converter station comprises members arranged on high voltage level and adapted to detect parameters of a voltage divider circuit consisting of resistances (24, 25) and capacitors (27, 28) connected in series and across each thyristor of said valve. The capacitors are of self-healing type, in which from the point of time for occurring of a possible fault thereof the capacitance is gradually reduced, and said members are adapted to carry out measurements so as to determine whether the capacitance of the capacitors is changed over the time.

  • Patent number: 5903155
Abstract: A method of measurement for fault distance determination on two or more parallel HVDC lines connected between two stations with a line fault locator is provided. The fault distance determination is performed by determining the difference in time, via synchronous clocks at each station, between travelling waves, which arise when a fault occurs, reach the two stations. The difference in time is determined by measuring the current associated with the travelling waves and detecting the current at the two stations and on each of the parallel connected lines.

  • Patent number: 4377780
Abstract: For damping torsional oscillations of an electric a.c. generator, a speed-sensing member, for example a tachometer-generator, is connected to the a.c. generator. The speed-dependent signal generated by the speed-sensing member is supplied to a band-pass filter which is adapted to the natural frequency of the torsional oscillations. The output signal of the band pass filter is supplied directly to the control angle determining means of a converter connected to the generator. In this way, the power of the converter is modulated in such a way that the oscillations are damped.
