  • Patent number: 8021313
Abstract: An air-tight foam-filled bladder is used for varying massage intensity in a massage chair, massage mat, or other massage device. The bladder may be compressed from a default or relaxed thickness by evacuating air from the bladder. The thickness of the foam-filled bladder may be reduced to a collapsed thickness in which the foam is compressed within the bladder. In use, the foam-filled bladder is placed proximate a conventional fixed massage mechanism in a massage device, such as in the back rest of a massage chair. By controlling the amount of air evacuated from the bladder, the intensity of the massage is controlled by varying the amount of pressure exerted by the fixed massage mechanism on the user. In the case of a massage chair, the user may advantageously sit back in the chair without discomfort when the user does not want a massage, and may control the intensity of the massage provided by the chair.

  • Publication number: 20080077061
Abstract: A massaging apparatus has a frame having a curved track including a plurality of curves; a mount engaging the curved track; a massage head coupled to the mount; and a motor adapted for moving the mount along the curved track. The mount engages the curved track such that movement of the mount along the curved track translates into a movement of the massage head that depends on the plurality of curves of the curved track.

  • Patent number: 7325878
Abstract: A chair with an extendable footrest for accommodating users of different height includes a seat frame, a slide frame mounted to slide on the seat frame between a retracted and extended position and a footrest frame mounted on the slide frame to move between down and up positions. A rotatable drive shaft is mounted on the seat frame and an elongated drive arm is secured at one end to the drive shaft. An extending linkage is connected between the other end of the drive arm and the slide frame to move the footrest frame from the down to the up position and thereafter move the slide frame from the retracted to the extended position, when the drive shaft is rotated in one direction. A retracting linkage connected between the said other end of the drive arm and the slide frame serves to the slide frame from the extended to the retracted position with the footrest frame in the up position when the drive shaft is rotated in the opposite direction.

  • Publication number: 20070203438
Abstract: A massage system is provided that includes a motor having an output shaft and at least one sliding block connected to the output shaft. The massage system also includes at least one bellows. Each bellows is connected to a corresponding one of the sliding blocks and is moveable between an extended position and a retracted position. When each bellows is moved from the extended to the retracted position air is expelled from the bellows. Similarly, when each bellows is moved from the retracted to the extended position air is taken into the bellows. Operation of the motor causes each sliding block to move between a first position and a second position, such that in the first position each sliding block compresses a corresponding one of the bellows to the retracted position and in the second position each sliding block releases said corresponding one of the bellows to the extended position.

  • Patent number: 7238162
Abstract: A warm air massager for heating and massaging a body part includes a massage node which includes openings for directing streams of heated air to the body part being massaged. The body part is massaged by the reciprocating motion of the massage node produced by an internal massage motor. The massage motor may rotate to cause an eccentric connector to impart reciprocating motion to a shaft coupled to the massage node. The massage motor may be located within the housing, within the massage node, or there may be multiple massage motors located in each of the housing and the massage node. Intake ambient air enters the massage housing by means of a fan which withdraws ambient air from outside, directs the ambient air through a heater element and directs streams of the heated air through the massage node to the body part being massaged. Each of the fan, the heater element and the massage motor or motors may include multiple settings. The fan and massage motor are preferably separately controlled.

  • Patent number: 7226428
Abstract: A massage system is provided that includes a motor, at least one bellows and at least one inflatable bladder connected to each bellows. Each bellows has an extended position and a retracted position, wherein operation of the motor causes each bellows to move between the extended and retracted positions. When each bellows is moved from the extended to the retracted position, air is expelled from the bellows and enters a corresponding one of the at least one inflatable bladder and when each bellows is moved from the retracted to the extended position, air is extracted from a corresponding one of the at least one inflatable bladder and enters the bellows.

  • Patent number: 7184655
Abstract: A footrest is provided comprising a base portion for placement on a supporting surface, a footplate connected to the base portion for receiving a foot of a user of the footrest, a heater connected to the base portion, an air intake system connected to the heater for drawing a first mass of air into the footrest, and an exhaust connected to the heater for expelling a second mass of air from the footrest. The heater receives the first mass of air, heats it, and expels it as a second mass of air. A warm air shield helps redirect the second mass of air expelled through the exhaust at the foot of the user placed on the footplate. The footplate may be made to pivot with respect to the base portion, or may be provided with a control knob so that a user may control the heater using her foot.

  • Patent number: 7004916
Abstract: An adjustable massaging device includes a track comprising two rails formed on a support structure. The device includes a carriage assembly that causes a massaging unit comprising a pair of massaging members to move back and forth along the rails on the support structure. The massaging members are mounted to a rotatable shaft in such a fashion as to perform a finger pressure-like massage or a tapping massage on the interior of the massaging surface, such that a user may be massaged by contacting the exterior of the massaging surface. The adjustable massaging device may be used in the back of a chair, for example, to massage a user's back. The support structure on which the massaging unit is formed is adjustable within the chair such that, in a retracted position, the massaging members are distanced from the massaging surface and the chair may be used as a standard office chair without any massaging parts contacting the massaging surface.
