  • Patent number: 5332234
Abstract: A sealing arrangement for sealing off a rod capable of lateral movement from a housing which surrounds the rod with radial clearance is disclosed. The sealing arrangement comprises a sealing ring of a polymer material, which is provided with a radially movable sealing lip and is accommodated in a sealing housing. An auxiliary sealing lip is provided, with which the housing is able to be brought into engagement by the force of a compression spring which is active in the axial direction. The sealing ring is braced by means of a guide ring against the rod, and the auxiliary sealing lip forms a one-piece component of the sealing ring.

  • Patent number: 5018749
Abstract: A slide ring seal to seal about a shaft with respect to a housing, including a slide ring 4 made of PTFE pressed against a counter surface 3, which is relatively rotatable, by means of pressure P of the medium to be sealed and basically extends in radial direction. The slide ring 4 has a basically rectangularly defined cross-sectional profile having a radially internal or radially external circumference surface 6, 5 basically extending parallel to the axis of the slide ring seal. The slide ring 4 is provided with a sealing edge 7 axially extending beyond the profile of a major portion of the cross section of the slide ring towards the counter surface and formed during manufacture. The sealing edge 7 has a diameter which is basically identical with the diameter of the circumference surface 6 exposed to pressure P of the medium to be sealed and it can be resiliently pressed to be surface planar with the profile of slide ring 4 by means of pressure P.

  • Patent number: 4709930
Abstract: In the combination of a shaft with a polymeric ring having a sealing surface which flares against a counter surface on the shaft to form a dynamic sealing zone therebetween upon relative rotation of the shaft and ring, both the sealing and counter surfaces have hydrodynamically-acting feed-back elements for pumping fluid which seeps between the surfaces upon the relative rotation. The resultant, net axial component of pumping actions of the elements is in one axial direction along the shaft to pump the fluid back into the space from which it came, but the elements have different pumping actions. The different pumping actions produce a fluid circulation in the dynamic sealing zone which inhibits seal-wearing granular deposits.

  • Patent number: 4695063
Abstract: A seal ring has an annular sealing lip of a polymeric material which bears resiliently about a shaft rotatable relative thereto with a sealing strip and hydrodynamically acting backfeed ribs to one side of the sealing strip. An annular projection projects from the other side of the sealing strip with a radial clearance between a cylindrical or conical interior surface of the annular projection and the shaft. The annular projection is united with the sealing strip in a bending-resistant manner. Damming ribs protrude uniformally about the interior surface of the annular projection. Each damming rib has a leading surface which makes an obtuse angle with the interior surface and is parallel to the axis thereof.

  • Patent number: 4546985
Abstract: A shaft seal ring has a support ring fixed to an annular machine element and a resilient lip ring engaging a co-axially rotatable shaft. Two intersecting conical surfaces form an innermost sealing edge on the lip ring. Channels extend from the sealing edge in one of the conical surfaces to a non-channeled portion thereof. Increasing pressure of a liquid sealed-in forces the channeled conical surface against the shaft to increase its sealing area correspondingly while the channels admit some of the liquid therebetween for lubrication.

  • Patent number: 4428587
Abstract: A seal ring seals a shaft in a housing dynamically and statically. The dynamic seal function is provided by a porous compact which rotates with the shaft to pump liquid media centrifugally back into the sealed space and generally radial, inward channels which similarly pump gases which penetrate the compact to the channels. An annular gas impingement surface is spaced from the discharge ends of the channels at an obtuse angle to entrain the pumped gases back into the sealed space. The static seal centrifugally opens upon rotation.

  • Patent number: 4304414
Abstract: A packing ring comprises a stiffening ring having an angular profile and an angularly profiled sealing element fastened thereon composed of an elastomeric material and having the configuration of a two-armed lever. The sealing element comprises a membrane portion forming one arm, a sealing lip on the other arm and an annular portion fastened by the membrane to the annular portion of the stiffening ring. The radial portion of the stiffening ring and the membrane portion define a cavity therebetween and a fulcrum axis is provided centrally of the two arms to pivot the sealing lip into contact with the surface to be sealed.

  • Patent number: 4277072
Abstract: A seal to prevent the escape of a liquid and gas mixture from the gap between a rotating shaft and the bore of a housing, which includes an inner ring secured to the shaft and an outer ring secured to the outer wall of the housing bore. A flange-like member is secured to the inner ring and employed to seal the gap between the inner ring and outer ring. The flange includes liquid and gas inlets, an internal network of voids and liquid and gas outlets. The internal void network of the flange member is adapted so that during the rotation of the flange member, gas and liquid oil is suctioned into the flange through the liquid and gas inlets, and are segregated by the rotary motion of the void network of the flange into a predominantly gaseous stream and a predominantly liquid stream.

  • Patent number: 4240643
Abstract: An annular seal for a shaft comprising an annular elastomeric lip 2 having an annular rim 2.1, and an annular reinforcing member 1 provided with a groove into which rim 2.1 fits. The portion of the member 1 spaced from the groove is compressible and in unassembled state is larger than in assembled state, the compression serving to lock the seal together. Multiple lips and/or grooves may be provided.

  • Patent number: 4202555
Abstract: A sealing ring comprises a reinforcing ring composed of thermoplastic material and has at least one annular groove therein and a lip ring concentrically nested in the reinforcing ring and having a circular bead for each annular groove. The circular bead has the same profile as the annular groove and is set therein. Each bead has a profile which in the projecting portion is enlarged in the manner of a wedge extending essentially radially outwardly and a nominal diameter on which each bead is disposed is smaller than the nominal diameter of the associated groove.

  • Patent number: 4194748
Abstract: In a sealed radial shaft assembly comprising a radial shaft and an annular sealing ring, the inside of said ring encircling said shaft, said sealing ring having fiber ends projecting therefrom and contacting said shaft so as to enhance said seal, the improvement which comprises an integrally molded casing about the outside of said ring. The casing may be molded of thermoplastic or thermosetting materials, e.g. polypropylene, polyurethane, or the like, and a stiffening reinforcement such as a metal ring may be embedded in the casing. If the ring portion is of fabric, the plastic fills the pores to form a unit therewith.

  • Patent number: 3973779
Abstract: A resilient shaft sealing lip is biassed to bear against a shaft when the shaft is at rest to prevent egress of lubricating liquid past the sealing lip, but upon rotation of the shaft at its rated speed the lip lifts so that sealing friction forces are limited to those generated by liquid friction and a return conveyor mechanism provided in combination with the lip, is effective upon shaft rotation to return escaping liquid and thereby take the place of a tight sealing lip for this purpose. The arrangement thereby provides reduced wear, reduced heat generation and reliable prevention of leakage with long service life consistent with economical and modular construction.

  • Patent number: 3938813
Abstract: An improvement in a sealing assembly for a shaft which sealing assembly has a housing for a fluid medium, a flexible sealing ring disposed within said housing and adapted to be disposed about said shaft in contact therewith and means for urging said flexible sealing ring disposed within said housing and adapted to be disposed about said shaft in contact therewith and means for urging said flexible sealing ring into contact with said shaft. The improvement resides in that the flexible sealing ring comprises a layer which is impermeable to said fluid medium, said layer disposed in facing relationship to the interior of said housing, said sealing ring having on its exterior surface which is to be in contact with the shaft free fiber ends, a majority of which are oriented in an axial direction towards the interior of said housing and are disposed in the direction of rotation of the shaft.
