  • Patent number: 6095740
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for manufacturing books or brochures with a book block of printed sheets which are thread-stitched at the side of the fold, wherein the method includes successively and in a predetermined sequence supplying the printed sheets spread in the middle and with the side portions thereof directed downwardly to a stitching saddle which interacts with a stitching device arranged at a right angle relative to the fold of the printed sheets. The printed sheets are positioned on the stitching saddle in accordance with the stitching position and are subsequently transferred to the stitching device for sewing the printed sheets into book blocks. The method further includes aligning the trailing edge of a supplied printed sheet on the stitching saddle flush on the right hand side in accordance with one of the top edge and the bottom edge of a book block which has at least been partially sewed by the stitching machine.

  • Patent number: 5984603
Abstract: An apparatus for producing book blocks from a stack of aligned signatures each having a fold and which together form a spine of a book block. An arrangement for stitching stitches the signatures together with at least two spaced transverse seams formed of a double strand of binding thread passing through each of the folds of the signatures from a location outside of the signatures and extending along an inner edge of each of the folds to an exit point in each of the folds. The transverse seams include a chained transverse seam having loop-like binding thread sections. An interrupting arrangement interrupts the chained transverse seam at an end region of the book block such that a last formed loop-like section of the binding thread remains unchained and is left at the end region of the book block. An unreleasably fastening arrangement unreleasably fastens the last formed loop-like section to either the chained transverse seam and the folds of the signatures.

  • Patent number: 5887863
Abstract: In order to recognize the open position of printed sheets supplied one after the other astride on a transfer apparatus to a sewing apparatus of a thread stitching machine, the printed sheets are guided in straddled position on at least one of the sides forming the inner fold edge of a printed sheet past a checking apparatus carrying out checks by way of the print images.

  • Patent number: 5887532
Abstract: During manufacture of thread-sewn book blocks (11) from a stack of flat sequentially juxtaposed signatures (3) which are sewn together by way of a double-stranded binding thread (9) which penetrates the folds (4) from the outside and extends in sections along the inside edge of the folds and is pulled out again, the binding thread sections (16, 17) which are inserted by a first sewing needle (5) between the legs (14) of the signatures (3) are captured by a gas jet and conveyed in form of a loop (21) to the adjacent second sewing needle (6) which pulls the loop (21) out of the signature (3) through a return stroke motion using a hook (22).

  • Patent number: 5507524
Abstract: A method and an article are disclosed pertaining to the production of book blocks comprising a stack of signatures each having a fold and which together form a spine of the book block, the signatures being aligned with one another on their flat sides and stitched together by means of a binding thread with at least two spaced transverse seams formed of a double strand of binding thread passing through each of the folds of the signatures from a location outside of the signatures and extending along an inner edge of each of the folds to an exit point in each of the folds, a first one of the at least two spaced transverse seams being formed by chaining together loop-like binding thread sections pulled successively out of the folds of the signature. The chained transverse seam is interrupted after a stack section determining the size of the book block has been formed.

  • Patent number: 5248234
Abstract: Stacks consisting of selected numbers of neighboring signatures are bound together by at least two rows of stitches. The thread which is used to form the rows of stitches is severed subsequent to completed assembly of a stack and following partial assembly of the next-following stack. It is preferred to assemble at least two signatures of the next-following stack prior to severing of the thread between the finished stack and the growing stack.
