  • Patent number: 6659918
Abstract: A device and method is shown for invoking a muscle's natural involuntary, reflexive response or stretch reflex by imparting a sudden increase in load on the muscle over a defined period of time from a predetermined base load at which the muscle has assumed a baseline tonus, and over a predetermined amplitude of motion. The muscle is stimulated by cycling the load with a frequency of between 1 and 60 Hz, or more preferably between 10 and 30 Hz, and an amplitude of displacement of the muscle between 2 and 50 mm, or more preferably between 5 and 10 mm. The force input to the muscle can be provided by either the mass of the body to which the muscle is connected or by an external mass or resistance to motion. A seesaw platform can be oscillated in a vertical direction at the correct frequency and amplitude.

  • Patent number: 6333008
Abstract: A measuring system and method are provided for performing luminometric series analyses on reaction components to be investigated and the liquid samples containing the magnetizable carrier particles binding the components. Sample chambers receive the liquid samples. These sample chambers are transported to a measuring station on a conveyor. Permanent magnets act on the sample chambers with magnetic fields during transport. A separating station is also provided, which is preferably equipped with a suction and rinsing device to remove the surplus reaction components separated from the carrier particles that accumulate on wall areas of the sample chambers under the influence of the magnetic fields.

Alternatively, a surface adapted to be fixed to a portion of the body can be oscillated relative to an external mass or other element that resists motion due to gravitational, frictional or inertial forces.

  • Patent number: 4898271
Abstract: In apparatus for the signaling of a back-up in a container conveyor, the actual translation speed of all containers passing a measuring zone is determined separately with the aid of the measuring of the transit time and compared with the simultaneously measured momentary travel velocity of a hinge-belt-chain conveyor. If the translation speed of the containers is smaller by a determined amount than the travel velocity, or in a predetermined relationship, a jam or back-up signal is produced. The device has two photodetectors arranged at the same level with a fixed spacing in the direction of bottle transportation. A sensor registers the presence of a bottle in the measuring zone. A tachometer generator is attached to the drive shaft of the conveyor and provides an analog signal to a processor indicative of conveyor speed.

  • Patent number: 4481595
Abstract: Containers pass through a radiation beam projected from a beam source to a detector. The detector output pulse rates at points where the container has passed partially into the beam and partially out of the beam are detected. Pulse rates during a measuring interval which lies between these points are divided by time units from a clock pulse generator to produce a signal representative of the average pulse rate during the interval. This signal is compared to a selectable reference signal. If a comparison is made, the comparator yields a signal indicative of whether or not material in the container was at a high enough level to attenuate the beam.
