    Abstract: A flowbore fluid temperature control system comprising a valve mechanism that adjusts the flow of a fluid through a flowbore. The flowbore fluid temperature control system also comprises an actuator that adjusts the valve mechanism. The flowbore fluid temperature control system also comprises an operating system that operates the actuator and controls the flowbore fluid pressure. The flowbore fluid temperature control system selectively controls the temperature of the flowbore fluid by adjusting the flow of the fluid through the flowbore. The control system controls the actuator and also controls the flowbore fluid pressure to affect the temperature of the flowbore fluid.

The temperature management system comprises a heat exchanger in thermal contact with the thermal component. The system also comprises a fluid transfer device that circulates a coolant fluid through a thermal conduit system. As the coolant flows through the heat exchanger, it absorbs heat from the component. Upon exiting the heat exchanger, the heated coolant flows to the heat sink where the heat sink absorbs heat from the coolant fluid.

    Abstract: A coiled tubing connector includes a male and female housing. A rotating ring having threads is disposed on the male housing. When the male housing is joined to the female housing, the threads of the rotating ring threadingly engage threads disposed on the internal circumference of the female housing. The male housing also includes splines which align with grooves on the female housing. Situated on both the male and female housing are electrical contacts which themselves engage when the housings are joined. The electrical contacts are connected to wires embedded in the composite tubing so that electrical power or data signals from one length of composite tubing can pass through the connector to another length of coiled tubing. The ends of the composite tubing are affixed to both the male and female housings through a compression fitting.

    Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for sequentially treating multiple zones in underground formation in a single trip of the well treatment work string. In the one embodiment, the work string includes composite tubing having electrical conductors embedded within the walls, the conductors enabling power transmission and two way communication between the surface and the sensor or detectors downhole so that real time data can be sensed and communicated. Isolation packers are actuated via electrical signals from the surface communicated to the bottom hole assembly via the conductors. A detector located in the bottom hole assembly may be provided to detect perforations or other anomalies in the casing, such as joints, enabling the surface controller to position packers properly in blank segments of casing so that well intervals can be properly isolated and the adjacent formation effectively treated.

    Abstract: A connector providing methods and apparatus for connecting two lengths of composite coiled tubing whereby the connector can be spooled with the tubing onto a reel. Embodiments of the connector include female and male housings which join together to create the coiled tubing connection providing mechanical and electrical or fiber optic connectivity between the two lengths of tubing. A connecting member on the male housing connectably engages the female housing. Splines on the male housing also align with corresponding flutes on the female housing. The female and male housings each attach to end portions of coiled tubing through a clamped connection and with the housings and connecting member being substantially flush with the outside diameter of the coiled tubing.

    Abstract: An inspection system for identifying predetermined features in coiled tubing, comprising a computer system configured to execute pattern recognition software and a plurality of imaging devices configured to capture video images of coiled tubing as the tubing passes by the imaging devices. Images captured by the inspection system are transmitted to the computer system and the pattern recognition software analyzes the image, extracts features from the image, and generates an indication if a defect is identified in the images. The computer system reads a counter signal to identify the longitudinal location along the coiled tubing at which the defect is located. The counter signal may also be used to enable or disable the inspection system. The system is capable of real-time processing or post processing by optionally storing the video images. The coiled tubing includes longitudinal striping as a reference to specify the annular position of a predetermined feature.

Alternatively, the container can have a hollow wall that encloses the space in which a heat sink material (such as an eutectic material) is disposed. The components to be protected are located in the container. The eutectic material includes a composition having tin and zinc. The insulating layer includes a container that stores a vacuum layer, such as a dewar flask.

    Abstract: A wireline, coiled tubing, and measurement while drilling resistivity tool having three or more receivers is disclosed. This results in a tool capable of gathering substantial resistivity data about a subterranean formation while being drawn quickly past a borehole wall. One embodiment of this resistivity tool includes four receivers and a pair of transmitters, resulting in six resistivity measurements from each firing of a transmitter. The transmitters are arranged to obtain a regularly spaced series of resistivity measurements. The transmitters may be fired at two or more frequencies to result in further information about the formation. Another embodiment of this resistivity tool places its transmitters and receivers to obtain a number of redundant resistivity readings, resulting in error checking and increased reliability. For enhanced performance, transceivers may also be used. An analogous method is also disclosed.

    Abstract: An azimuthally tunable resistivity measurement tool is provided. In one embodiment, the tool comprises a set of three skewed receiver antennas and a transmitter antenna. The three skewed receiver antennas are oriented in equally-spaced azimuthal directions to give them preferential sensitivity in those directions. The transmitter antenna transmits a radio-frequency signal that propagates through the formation surrounding a borehole. The signals from the three receiver antennas can be measured and combined to synthesize the signal that would be received by a virtual antenna oriented in any desired direction. Accordingly, virtual receivers oriented perpendicular to the tool axis and with variable azimuthal orientations can be synthesized. The orientation of such a virtual receiver that has a maximized receive signal amplitude can be used to identify the direction of a nearby bed boundary, and the maximized amplitude can be used to estimate the distance to the boundary.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for sealing an inner wall of a portion of a casing positioned in a well employs an inflatable sleeve having an outer surface and a conformable composite sleeve of curable composition extending around the outer surface of the inflatable sleeve. The inflatable sleeve is inflated to compress the composite sleeve against the surface of the inner casing wall. A local, activatable energy source, positioned downhole to deliver heat to the composite sleeve, is activated to cure the composite sleeve to form a hardened sleeve. The hardened sleeve presses against the inner wall of the casing portion to create a fluid seal. The embodiments shown have a number of preferred features. The local energy source includes an exothermic heat energy source for generating heat energy to cure the composite sleeve. The composite sleeve includes a mixture of resin and a curing agent, and the exothermic heat source includes thermite. The thermite includes a composition having a metal oxide and a reductant.

    Abstract: A load cell for sensing weight and torque on a drill bit during a drilling operation includes a cylindrical load cell made from a material with minimum residual stress. A plurality of strain gages are arranged symmetrically on each load cell and electrically coupled to form two Wheatstone bridges. The load cells are mounted 180 degrees apart in radial pockets drilled in a drill collar wall. A half Wheatstone bridge from one load cell is electrically coupled with a half Wheatstone bridge from the other load cell to form a Wheatstone bridge for measuring WOB and a similar coupling is made to form another Wheatstone bridge for measuring TOB. In another embodiment, additional strain gages in another Wheatstone bridge measure differential pressure. The output of the pressure and weight bridges are electrically combined to provide a weight signal unaffected by differential pressure fluctuations.
